First up I think I need to explain this title of my option a bit, a shag is the national dance of South Carolina, a very complicated dance I have yet to master but looks a lot of fun. Having lived in both America and England I have seen a lot of differeces between the two places, and one of them is the language so I thought I would play with it a bit to get some more reads. Sorry but you were fooled.
Having lived here until I was 12 years old I have loved the place since the first time I could look around and remember a place. Charleston is a place full of warmth and hospitality. People are always friendly and there is always a smile on the local’s lips.
Charleston is situated on the coast of South Carolina and has warm temperatures up to 100 degree's F in the summer and does not get much colder then 40-50 degrees F in the winter.
Charleston is a great place to visit for the local history and the beauty of the state. Just walking down the Battery you are able to see houses built over a hundred years ago with magnificent gardens in them. All the houses are brightly coloured and Rainbow Row is one of the most famous of the houses.
Going down to the local market you are able to buy pretty much anything your heart can desire, with local women weaving baskets to sell, I can still smell the tantalizing smell as you walk pass of the baskets and the mixture of spicy local food.
As you walk further along the battery you can come to many local museums, which are full of local folklore, and different events that have happened here, as many people know the first shot of the Civil War was shot at Fort Summit.
Going deeper into Charleston you will see plenty of shops and local restaurants to go into, many with local dishes, which can only be found around Charleston. The shops are full of local crafts, which are both practical and beautiful.
Going just outside Charleston you can go to Drayton Manor, which is an old rice plantation with a massive, beautiful house, which overlooks hundreds of old, rice paddies, anyone could quite happily go there for hours to look around.
Another great place to go is Magnolia Gardens, which is full of wonderful gardens, and flowers of every colour, going in a canoe over swampland can bring to some of the most beautiful of places.
The beaches of Charleston I think are one of the best around with miles of gorgeous, soft sand, which are sometimes untouched due to tourists only coming at certain times in the year. The sea is a deep green with the waters very warm in the summer; the beach is even a lovely place to go in the winter, as it really never gets that cold in Charleston.
There are many other attractions to get you to go to Charleston from its forts to its culture, as it is alive with both. I would definitely advise anyone who wanted to see a beautiful city that is hardly untouched by time then this is the place to go.
I would however recommend that most people go to Charleston in the month of October or in April or May this is due to the hot weather as it is not only very hot but also humid, so people who are not used to this weather will not be greatly affected by the temperature and humidity. Although if you do go in the summer, I do also recommended this bring plenty of sunscreen and also make sure that you are prepared to be very hot and sweat a lot (HAHAH!!!) although this a great city to visit in the summer as the beaches really do come alive at this time of year, so I hope you have a pleasant trip to Charleston and if anyone would like to write a comment on what they thought of Charleston good or bad I would love to read, so happy visiting :)
