...Montreuil surMer is an old walled town at the top of a steep hill and was once a important port, but is now some distance from the sea. There are excellent views over the surrounding countryside from the town walls. There are a couple of good hotels and a selection of restaurants. In both categories the Clos des Cappucins is a personal favourite (see the separate entry).
Montreuil is about forty minutes drive from Calais on the autoroute. This includes an inexpensive paid section which you can bypass by driving on the coast road from Boulogne to Le Touquet....

Advantages: Boulogne Sur Mer... A Gorgeous Seaside Town Disadvantages: None to Speak of...
...with the channel crossing as Dover, whilst Boulogne languished in relative obscurity, on this side of the water, anyway. Perhaps all sea-crossings of the channel are doomed to become quaint anachronisms in time, especially since the advent of cheap flights, and the completion of the Channel Tunnel. Nonetheless, since last year, things are beginning to change. Boulogne is on the up. Why? Well, a ferry link has been re-established. It is fast, it is efficient and it is very cheap. Less unassuming but also good albeit somewhat pricey is the ChateauCléry at Hesdin l'Abbé (0033 321 83 19 83). Inland from Boulogne at Wierre Effroy is a warm and welcoming farm-hotel, the inexpensive Ferme du Vert (0033 321 87 67 00), while further inland still at Le Wast is the HotelChateau des Tourelles (0033 321 33 34 78), which has good food and friendly service.
CALAIS. To my mind a notably less attractive town than Boulogne, but there is a bit to see in the middle with the Art Museum, War Museum, Lighthouse and Town Hall. There are numerous hotels in the town centre and on the sea front, none of which I've tried, but west of town along the coast near Cap Blanc Nez is the decent and inexpensive Hotel l'Escale (0033 321 85 25 00).
