The small island is located about 30 mins boat ride from the centre of Marseilles. The castle built in the 16th century is the same as that in the famous classic by Alexandre Dumas " The Count of Monte Cristo". I took a picnic with me as once the visit if finished, it is fun to lounge around on the outside lawns while waiting for the boat to come. The visit is lenghty and informative, the castle conatining prisons which were closed in the 19th century, though the atmosphere is still suitably creepy, a great hit with kids! Boat trips are cheap and frequent from the Old Port in the centre of Marseilles and frequency increases in the summer tourist season. A great day out!
Advantages: Cheaper than England, great food, easy to get to, friendly people Disadvantages: High crime rate, polluted (aren't all big cities??!?) Its French (Lol)
different to any other cathedral. Though I don't know of any other city having the cathedral overlooking the city. But this is a must visit if your in Marseilleif only just to see the view.
And don't forget your camera like I did!! The postcards for sale are of poor quality and are a rip-off!

To get there you need to take a ferry from Marseille, which takes around 30 minutes.
