The best place for shopping in Bangkok is undoubtedly Chatuchak market (formerly Chatuchak weekend market but it's now open on weekdays too.) In ye olden days, you had to go there by taxi or bus, but since the innovation of the sky train, getting there from the business or tourist areas of Sukhumvit or Silom is very easy.
It only costs a few Baht on the sky train and if you're in Bangkok, you really shouldn't miss this market. So what's so good about it? Everything! You want it - they've got it. This place has to be seen to be believed. It's massive. And it's also very cheap.
What would you like? Livestock, glassware, dishes, clothes, souvenirs, food... (hey, this is staring to sound like I'm on the "Just a minute" radio show). Seriously, they have everything. There's even a little bar in there where you can rest your weary feet and have a cold beer, whilst telling the vendors you don't want to buy their snacks.
Without doubt, Chatuchak is the best place to shop in Bangkok. Unless you're looking for computer stuff, then you'll want to go to Pantip Plaza - but that's another story.

I'm going to Bangkok in October, would have liked a little more info in your review... what do you mean by livestock? are they kept in cruel conditions? what sort of prices do things sell for at the market? do you need to barter? xx

Thanks for the tip - I'm going to SE Asia in February for 6 months and my first stop is Bangkok, so this is very helpful! If you feel like being even *more* helpful and you have some more tips for when I get to Bangkok I'd be eternally grateful if you e-mailed me on hays_nick@hotmail.com Ok, so it was a long-shot...
