Advantages: Good night life, relaxed. Disadvantages: Crime, not much culture.
I lived In Costa Rica for 6 years and I spent most of my time in the capital, Sanjose, which is what I am writing about now.
The city itslef is quite small for a capital city but it makes it easyto navigate (up to a point!!). SanJose is located right in the middle of the country in what is called the 'central valley' although it isn't actually a valley.
The airport is in the north west of the city, actually outside SanJose.
Actually most of the decent hotels are outside the center too.
I cannot really recommend and as I have not really used one but I did stay in the Hampton Inn once and it was fine.
Taxis
Use them, they are cheap.
A 30 minute drive could set you back the enourmous cost of £1.20!!
They are red with a yellow triangle on the door. They are official but there are pirates around. Don't use them is my ...
Advantages: Good weather. And some different ice creams. Disadvantages: Not much else
, but still, a hotel with its own ice cream place is pretty cool. The city does have "proper" restaurants but none appealed to me enough to visit on my own, especially since their prices are out of proportion with other things in the city. My best find was a big supermarket - Mas Y Menos - on Avenida Central. I love supermarkets. I also found another couple on Calle 3, just north of the Plaza de la Cultura.
SHOPPING
Shopping is not the reason you go to SanJose. With time to kill before our welcome meeting I went to explore El Pueblo, the Centro Comercial on my map. It was deader than dead but still reminded me weirdly of Ports O'Call in San Pedro. After being harranged by an over-enthusiastic shop owner (the only one, enthusiastic or otherwise, in the place), I ran away, and quickly. The shops along Avenida Central are fine, but ...
Advantages: Always one close by, quick turn out, children are welcome and catered for. Disadvantages: Toilets can be quite disturbing, not all dishes taste as good they are described.

**** Parking and Getting a Table *****
As with most of the Harvester's I have visited, there is usually ample free parking at the rear of the establishment. However on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch times these places are heaving with customers, so avoid the crowds, go early and if possible ring and reserve a table. The Stag and Hounds is no exception but fortunately ...
