A Cestrian's View of Chester

Advantages: Rich in history, lots to do rain or shine
Disadvantages: Expensive parking, busy in high season

I lived in Chester for 26 years before I got married and moved to North Wales, and would like to give my view on this ancient town. My review is aimed at tourists from all walks of life, of all ages and with various tastes in what they look for when visiting a town for the first time.

...with the full history of Chester because this review is intended on giving information of what the town has to offer to tourists today. The town is chock full of museums and historical centres which give endless information on the history of the place and, in my mind, it is all part of the Chester experience to look and learn as you go along.

Chester

Advantages: Great Torist Attraction
Disadvantages: Isnt One

Chester was founded By the romans many years ago (I can't find exactly when, in either books or on the net). From what started off a small market place, gathered over the years to become a hugely visited city. Located in the north West of england, just on the welsh Border. Shopping ~~~~~~~~ The main shops are located in or around the city Centre. It has a vast range of stores as well as well known high street brands, such as HMV, boots etc. One ...
...Chester Cathedral. One thing, you'll notice about chester is, most companies have atleast two shops in the city, so your never far away from the shop you need. While on your shopping spree, visit the little shops, such as corner shops etc, as you'll find some of the cheaper products in them. Restaurants ~~~~~~~~~~~ Theres quite a lot of Resteraunts in chester, thats for sure. Fatty Arbuckles, macdonalds, Burger King and not forgeting the 5 star ...

beautiful deva

Advantages: cute, historic
Disadvantages: a bit boring

...well worth a trip to Chester by themselves - although drinking on them is forbidden by an ancient by-law. A shame, but the handful of pubs up there have more than enough history to compensate for this. The architectural niceties are not confined to Tudor design, either. The Town Hall is a remarkable piece of work, and to the right of this are the library, which preserves the facade of an earlier building, and a 1930's Odeon cinema, built in the ...
...you're intending to stay in Chester rather than have a day there, you'd just better be obsessive about your buildings and architecture, that's all. Don't get me wrong though - this side of York and Norwich, there are very few other more pleasant places to visit in England than Chester. ...

Chester Zoo

Advantages: Family fun day out!
Disadvantages: Pricey

I've been to Chester Zoo about 6 times now and each and every time I've visited it's looked totally different. I remember when I was five, This Morning had a competition on. If your name was Emma you could ring up leave your details and you could win tickets to Chester Zoo to see the new baby Rhino, who was also called Emma. Unfortunately I didnt win, but did get to see baby Emma a couple of years later and actually I think she's still there now. ...
...are endangered. On entering Chester Zoo there is a massive car park and overflow, coach packing area and Enterance Booths. It costs £13 per adult and I assume under 2's are free. There is a First Aid point by the enterance and a secon point by Jubilee Square Zoofari Overhead Railway. There are various 'Lost Children' points, cash points, baby changing facilities and public telephones situated at various places around the zoo. Everything from babies ...

Lovely cut city

Advantages: lovely small city
Disadvantages:

I've been lived in Chester for almost one year and found it such a lovely city to live in. Certainly the ancient Roman wall makes it an unique city from all the others. always good to take a walk on the wall in the summer evening and enjoy the quiet moment. definitely quite a popular city for people to come for a day trip or shopping. There are lots of events and festivals in July. Always busy on the town hall square and street performers are everywhere. ...

When in Chester, do what the locals do

Advantages: Lovely place
Disadvantages: Does there need to be one

...~~~~~~ The history of Chester extends back nearly two millennia ago, covering all periods of British history in between then and the present day. The city of Chester was founded as a fort, known as Deva, by the Romans in AD 79, and named after the goddess of the River Dee.[citation needed] The city was the scene of battles between warring Welsh and Saxon kingdoms throughout the post-Roman years until the Saxons strengthened the fort against raiding ...
...considerable amount of land in Chester is owned by Duke of Westminster who owns an estate - Eaton Hall - near the village of Eccleston. Grosvenor is the Duke's family name, which explains such features in the City such as the Grosvenor Bridge, the Grosvenor Hotel, and Grosvenor Park. Much of Chester's architecture dates from the Victorian era, with many of the buildings modelled on the Jacobean half timbered style of the medieval times being designed ...

Chester Zoo

Advantages: Great day out
Disadvantages: None

This past weekend I also had the opportunity to go to Chester Zoo and what a great day out we had. I haven't been to the zoo in years but my best friend moved up here a few years a ago and has a season ticket so she suggested going and I though it was a great idea. Funnily enough Chester zoo is located in Chester in the north west of England. Chester is not a very big place and the zoo is located fairly near the centre of town so it is very easy to find and very well sign posted. The zoo was opened in 1931 by George Mottershead and is the biggest zoo in the UK. According to their brochure hand out that you receive with your tickets, the park covers 110 acres of gardens, has 7,000 animals and over 400 different species. When we arrived at the zoo it was nice to find that they had free parking. We went on a Sunday and it was quite ...

the only place your allowed to kill a welshman

Advantages: The authentic atmosphere
Disadvantages: The mordernisation of such a great city

laws from 200 years ago or more, which can still in use today. - It is legal for an Englishman to kill a Welshman on the walls of Chester, at 2am, with a bow and arrow - A black cab must contain straws of hay otherwise face a fine. Brief history of Chester? Chester City is one of the oldest cities in Chester. Founded by the Romans, this town has had many long and tiring battles with the welsh. To this day you will still find some of the English fighting or arguing with the Welsh. Chester has seen many famous and royal faces over the years, with such people as Princess Diana, who opened the local hospital. A roman settler founded Chester, when the Romans invaded England for the first time. After London, it is believed Chester is the oldest town in the UK. Whether this is true, who knows? I would recommend Chester ...

Review of Chester in General

Big choice, -some- big savings

Advantages: A massive range of shops all in one location
Disadvantages: Parking can be difficult at weekends

purse) is empty there are on site ATMs (cash machines to you and me). When you feet need a rest there is a selection of restaurants and cafes. Most are clustered around the ?Foodcourt?, but there are a few scattered around the site including the ubiquitous MacDonalds. To keep the kiddies entertained (briefly) there is a play area but I?d suggest this really isn?t the best day out for young children. When you have finished with your shopping trip, there are more things to do ? a multi-screen cinema, bowling alley and nightclub are next door at ?The Coliseum?. I won?t list all the stores here; life?s too short. If you are really interested I suggest you check out their website (www.mcarthurglen.com), where you will find a complete store list and a site plan. The centre is situated next to J10 of the M53 a few miles to Chester. Most ...
