* GETTING THERE….
By road….. The zoo is easily found in Chester. Along the M56 to Junction 14, (or M53 junction 12) and simply follow the brown zoo signs. The route via the A41 is also clearly signposted.
By other means… Chester Railway station is only 2 miles away and the public transport from there is good with most bus routes running every half hour during the season. Please check with local operators.

*THE ZOO…
* BRIEF HISTORY… Opened in 1931 by The Mottershead family and covering over 400 acres of land. Totally fenced around in 1986 under the Zoo Licensing Act of 1981
The zoo is now run by North of England Zoological Society, (a registered charity which needs much more support as no funding comes from the government).
*GETTING AROUND… You can walk steadily around the park at your own pace, or take the Monorail via the two 'stations' around the park, (tickets are valid for a return type journey and can be bought at the machines). Then there is also the Waterbus which runs from the East Zoo Jetty from Easter until Autumn. This 15 minute journey allows a more relaxed way to view the animals of the zoo. *WHAT TO SEE…
Once you've paid the entrance fee and walked through the little hut like entrance you are presented with a vast open space, almost bewildering. There are shops to the right and toilet facilities to the left. It would at this point be wise to study the map of the park before you continue, although the route around the zoo tend to be well sign posted and circular.
The first animals to see will be the Elephants, they are wondering around a large enclosure type pit directly in front as you stand near the entrance.
Other animals to see include…
Wild cats.. such as Lions, Tigers (in a massive enclosure) and the Jaguars, (in the Spirit of Jaguar house which opened in 2001)
The Ape families swinging or relaxing around their well sized inhabitant, on Monkey island.
Bats in the very dark and damp Twilight Zone Bat Cave, (not for the faint hearted or nervous disposition).
Camels, Rhino's, Penguins, flamingos, Pandas, reptiles of all kinds…. The list is almost endless with so many beautiful (and some not so beautiful) creatures in one place.
There is so much to do here that a whole day is needed and with the many picnicking areas there is always somewhere to sit, eat and relax.
There is a good sized restaurant near the Lion enclosure, which serves a selection of hot and cold food.
The toilet facilities are scattered around the park so you are never too far from one if needed.
This is a family friendly place and caters well for the disabled as well, plus with friendly, helpful staff your day out will not be spoilt at all, (apart from the Great British weather).
*CONCLUSION… I have been on several occasions with my family and have enjoyed my visit on each occasion. There is always something new to see each year and the animals are fascinating to watch.(especially the monkeys as they seem to enjoy the attention, showing off on their swings and tyres)
Although some people dislike the idea of animals being caged and away from their 'natural environment' Chester Zoo do treat the animals with great care and respect, housing them as near to their natural environment as possible.

We had a wonderful day out here apart from the weather, it rained and rained all day. I loved the bat cave, kind of spooky but also rather magical I thought. :-)
