It has a population of approximately 53,000 which is pretty sparse as American cities go but this is one of the factors that makes Cheyenne so endearing. Coming from one of the UK’s busiest and largest cities I had my concerns that I would find Cheyenne quite a shock to the system but I have many wonderful memories of the place and really hope that it does not change too much in the future.

For instance, at one end of town you will find the modern Frontier Shopping Mall and multiscreen cinema along with an abundance of Mexican, Italian, Korean, Chinese and of course fast food restaurants whilst at the other there are many art galleries, clothes stores selling “cowboy” attire and restaurants offering the tastes of the West such as buffalo steaks and Rocky Mountain Oysters.
The city is home to one of North America’s foremost military installations F.E Warren Air Force Base which is primarily a missile base. At the same time, it is home to the largest outdoor rodeo in the US – the week long July Frontier Days – “the Daddy of ‘em all” where you can see genuine and scary bull riding, bareback bronc, steer roping, barrel racing and wild horse racing. Cheyenne is certainly quite a diverse place. The city is surrounded by prairie with the Laramie Mountains on one side and the Rocky Mountains on the other.
Some of the best outdoor recreation and scenery in the US can be found within one hour’s drive from Cheyenne. Medicine Bow National Forest and Curt Gowdy State Park are wonderful for camping, fishing, hiking and wildlife spotting (antelope are abundant in Wyoming). The area of Vedauwoo with is unusual natural granite formations is also well worth a visit. There are numerous ranches on the outskirts of Cheyenne that offer horse riding to both novices and the expert horse rider. In Cheyenne itself there are golf courses and several parks such as Frontier Park, Lions Park and Holliday Park which is home to the largest steam locomotive in the world “Big Boy”. The Terry Bison ranch which is situated 10 miles south of the city is great fun and features bison drives, wagon tours and horse back riding.
There are also numerous museums in Cheyenne including the Old West Museum with its large collections of wagons and stage coaches, Wyoming State Museum with 10 galleries of exhibits and Francis E. Warren Air Force Base Museum. As Cheyenne is the state capitol the rather splendid Wyoming State Capitol Building with its gold dome is also open to visitors and is worth a visit.
If you are looking for a lively city break then Cheyenne is not the place for (a couple of reasonable nightclubs and bars but for the majority it really helps to be a country music fan!) whereas if you like the outdoors and a variety of different activities during your holiday then I would certainly recommend it. Food, clothing and outdoor pursuits are all very reasonably priced in Cheyenne and reflect the excellent value for money available in many parts of the US. It is important to note that Cheyenne is a glorious place in the summer but the winters can be very cold and long so I would recommend a visit between the months of May and September. Also, it is worth noting that the city is 6000 feet above sea level so you may experience minor altitude sickness (shortness of breath of slight headaches). These symptoms had however in my case disappeared within a couple of days. Cheyenne has a small municipal airport with the nearest international airport being Denver – 100 miles away. The drive to Cheyenne from Denver should not take more than two hours with it being interstate all the way. There are daily connecting flights from Denver to Cheyenne if you cannot face the drive and have the extra cash to afford it!
Advantages: So many to mention Disadvantages: None at all
::::: What is the Cheyenne Hotel:::::
The Disney's Hotel Cheyenne is a wild west based theme hotel. It is made to look as if it is in the wild west, with horses, cowboys etc. You've seen all the movies. It does look real, and every detail has been put in to make it look "wild west". The main reception building, where the restaurant is, and other hotel buildings surrounding it have funky wild west writing on the sides of the buildings which says things like "Saloon" "Jail" and "Billy The Kid". This is a good idea, not the names of each hotel building but gives the hotel that extra feel of the hotel area. There are around 10 different hotel blocks, each separated. The main building is where most people go at breakfast, at dinner if they choose to eat there, or when they check in, or out. This is a good place to meet as a meeting point ...
Advantages: Clean Facilities, Fun settin Disadvantages: Poor Breakfast Selection
I went on a group visit to Business Live at Disneyland Paris at the beginning of March. Our accomodation was the Disney Hotel Cheyenne.
The hotel is not your standard 1 building hotel, it is a hotel spread across a wide area - in this case Wild West themed buildings like the Sherrif hut, Bar etc etc.
Our group was allocated block 16 - a nicely situated one near the bus stop. I was with 2 of my friends in which the bedrooms are made up of one bunk bed and one double bed - ideal for 2 kids 2 adults. The beds are nice and comfortable and ideal for collapsing onto after a day around the park.
The room is very basic. It has a cowboy boot lamp and various sherrif stars around the room. They don't supply kettles and tea for morning use (that could just be that we were students - I'm not sure if there is meant to be one there), they ...
