Chez Bruce, London

Introduction ************ The name, Chez Bruce, pronounced phonetically (as it sounds) and not the usual French way is a clue to the laid back, down to earth attitude that makes this Michelin starred restaurant in my opinion one of a kind. Chez Bruce is located at 2 Bellevue Road, Wandsworth Common, London, SW17. If it's not a part of the world you are familiar with then let me set the scene.

Wandsworth is home to 'nappy ...

The Chef
**********
The eponymous chef/owner Bruce Poole honed his craft at some of London's top restaurants (Bibendum & The Square) before opening his own place 11 years ago. His non fussy cooking style has ensured that Chez Bruce is one of the most popular places to eat in London. Foodie bible, Square Meal' has listed Chez Bruce in its top 3 London restaurants for the last 2 years ... more

...West London, in unlikely Wandsworth, Chez Bruce (not Chey Bruce) oozes quality. From entering the restaurant, when greeted by the Maitre d', to taking ones seat there was a feeling that this would be something special. Thankfully, I was not be disappointed by this feeling. Even though the name is not too French, (who heard of a French man named Bruce?) the restaurant had a very French feel to it from the wooden floors, as in a typical French Bistro, ...
...The waiters are invariably French and extremely knowledgeable, if a little indifferent, and are more than willing to explain the menu to you. The menu itself is of the Prix Fixe (fixed price) variety and was extremely varied and extensive, if a little pricey at 27.50 per hed. The Gisele Duck was delicate and beautifully presented. The mains were equally delightful. The Magret de Canard arrived medium rare and was moist, delicate and well presented. ...

Better than all the rest

Advantages: The food
Disadvantages: Service can be a little slow

So why is Chez Bruce my favourite restaurant in London? Well the location helps, right next to Wandsworth Common, but then I live nearby, and anyway you can't guarantee a view of the grass. The price too is a boon, at £25 odd for a top notch three course meal it is very hard to complain (compare that to the Ivy or anywhere Gordon Ramsey has ever cooked; and trust me they are appropriate benchmarks). But of course, I'm teasing you. The reason this ...
...you eat here will be a revelation. Chef Bruce Poole, knows lots of things: the menu is an object lesson in how to mix inspirations, present colours and (my favourite) vary textures. But most of all he knows one thing: what makes a powerful combination of flavours. Just sitting here is leaving me hungry. Try the duck with garlic dauphinois potatoes and only the puritanical should pass on the chocolate pudding with praline ice cream and hot chocolate ...
