Advantages: Location in excellent Disadvantages: breakfast - don't bother, go to a cafe
The location of this hotel is excellent for a night out in the nearby Bairro Alto area and for shopping in the Chiado area. The Metro station is right opposite and the famous cafe brasiliera is very close.
We booked a triple room and were a bit disappointed that the third bed was a sofa bed, but the room was large and clean and had a good standard of bathroom.
The breakfast was very basic - just a bread roll or a croissant and coffee from a machine which is the worst cup of coffee I have had in Portugal. But for the price you can always get a decent breakfast in one of the many nearby cafes. The hotel has lifts which are old fashioned but much better than struggling up stairs with your luggage which is often what you get at this price range.
The staff were friendly enough.
Don't expect to have a quiet night's sleep though ...
Advantages: A Vibrant City with a Cosmopolitan Atmosphere Disadvantages: A bit hilly for some
, a 'cold greenhouse' in an old quarry where tropical plants thrive amid ponds and running water.
Food, Fado and Literary Areas
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two other areas of the city which I find very interesting are the Chiado and the Bairro Alto.The Chiado is the literary quarter and it can be reached by the decent from the Largo do Carmo. Just be careful you don't get showered with water from the baroque fountains and attacked by the flocks of pigeons as you walk from Carmo to the Chiado. Monuments and streets here are dedicated to Portuguese poets and writers. Old fashioned cafes such as A Brasileria and Pastelaria Bernard in Rua Garrett, antique shops and antiquarian booksellers such as Livraria Bernard (opened in 1732), Sao Carlos Opera House and other theatres help to create an artistic atmosphere. The district has been given a cultural ...
Advantages: relaxed food the way it ought to be Disadvantages: it's too far from London to make it for dinner!
If you are in downtown Lisbon, around Rossio or Chiado, Just ask any taxi driver for 'Trindade' or make your way to 20-B Rua Nova da Trindade and pay homage at the 'Cervejaria da Trindade'.
No, it's not really a restaurant, I guess, but it doesn't fit any other category. A cerveijaria is an alehouse, but this isn't a pub nor is it a bar in the Portuguese sense. To be technical, I'm told that it's a microbrewery - but I've only ever drunk ice-cold Sagres there. BUT, the one thing for which cerveijarias are famous is good, easy, comfortable FOOD.
So, what's it like? Well, it's old, and big. Imagine a room the size of a barn with Potuguese 'azulejo' tiles decorating the walls. Find one of the many tables and when your attentive waiter comes by, be hopeful that he speaks English .... but if not order 'um imperial' (oonimperiahl), 20 ...
