I visited Thailand earlier this year (March 05). Admittedly I am not a great lover of zoos but my travel companion really wanted to check out the Chiang Mai Zoo. I went with an open-mind but was very disappointed. I am writing this review a few months on but my memory is still very clear!
As with most attractions it was reasonably priced coming from the UK (can't remember exact price sorry)
I have been to several zoos in major cities and this was nothing compared to them. The actual sights were very sparse, and in some of the enclosures there were no animals. In the enclosures where the animals were kept were very uninspiring and unimaginative.
The whole zoo is very spread out and very hilly requiring a lot of walking. I don't mind walking but in the middle of a summer day it was absolutely exhausting. After about an hour of walking and seeing very little I choose to wait for my friend in the air-conditioned café.
If you would still like to check out the zoo my one recommendation would be to buy a ticket for the little train that takes you around the whole park, it would save you so much hassle! I absolutely loved my stay in Thailand but my zoo visit was definitely the lowest part of my trip.
