It is not commonly known that Liverpool has the oldest Chinatown anywhere in Europe. It is,for example, considerably older than London's Chinatown. The Chinese community in this famous old port are mostly not recent migrants from the likes of Hong Kong,Singapore or Malaysia but have lived in the city for several generations. Some of them are known to have rather broad scouse accents and their knowledge of Cantonese might well be a bit rudimentary. Liverpool is twinned with another famous port city,Shanghai, which is one of the most lively and outward looking cities in that country. The twinning has come in handy for recently a wonderful Chinese archway was built in Liverpool's Chinatown by craftsmen from that city. Chinese New Year is a very important celebration for the Chinese people and it falls during February. It is important for people to attend reunion dinner and and for businessmen to treat their employyes to a New Year dinner.Another significant event that takes place during this period is the Lion Dance. Liverpool's Chinatown is located in an area near the Anglican Cathedral and is a thoroughly fascinating area to explore. It houses a number of fine, authentic,Chinese restaurants and dining out here is usually much cheaper than in London's Chinatown.
