Diakofto lies on the north coast of the Pelelponnese, at the entrance to a spectacular gorge which operates a thrilling rack-railway system through the ravine to the ski resort of Kalavrita, although the train journey is impressive whatever the season as the train crosses tiny bridges and passes through numerous tunnels en route. Trains from Athens to Patras pass through Diakofto and The Chris Paul Hotel is an excellent base to explore the area. The hotel is only 50 metres from the railway station and offers 35 clean and spacious rooms, which have heating/air con, telephone & TV. It has a bright, modern reception, which leads into the breakfast room. There is also an outside eating area and, apart from breakfast, snacks and drinks are available. Despite being in the centre of the village, the location is very peaceful and looks out onto lemon groves. The staff are very friendly and helpfull and have timetables for trains in and out of town, as well as for the rack-railway system. The breakfast provided is the usual continental fare of bread, jam, cheese, juice, coffee and cake. English breakfast is available at extra cost. The hotel is good value for money. I paid 35 Euro for a single room (which contained a king size bed) with breakfast - that was in April, so the rate is probably higher peak season. The hotel accepts internet reservations through their website.
