Ancient Meadows with Archaic Rules

Advantages: A pleasant place to stroll near the river in the centre of Oxford.
Disadvantages: Its not particularly interesting.

Christ Church Meadow is one of the two green spaces near the centre of Oxford open to the public, the other being the Parks: the University owns both.

In all honesty neither are what you would call tourist attractions and the only reason I am writing about it at all is because Ciao have listed it under gardens to visit. However, if you are visiting Oxford it provides a pleasant escape from the traffic and bustle of the city centre, ...
...There are several entrances to Christ Church Meadows: from St. Aldates through the war memorial garden with its colourful herbaceous border, from cobbled Merton St., or from the top of High St., opposite Magdalen college via Rose Lane.

Whichever entrance you choose you will be greeted by a set of rules which make the byelaws of the University Parks pale into insignificance:

Lovely City, just don't bring the car!

Advantages: lots to see
Disadvantages: can get crowded

I have lived in Oxford for four years now. Oxford is probably best known for the University, but it is also the home of Rover (soon to be BMW) so it isn't all gowns and mortarboards. The city centre is dominated by the various colleges of the University, and the best way to get to grips with which is which is to take one of the open top bus tours which run regularly from the bus and train station. Wahtever you do - don't drive in. Oxford's controversial transport strategy has closed streets and pushed up the price of parking. Unless you're only going to be in town for an hour, it's better to leave your car at the park and ride and take the bus into town. Oxford is compact, and can be easily seen on foot. Most of the colleges are open to the public, but opening times for all are different. One of the nicest is Christ Church ...

Review of Oxford (England)

Home

Advantages: Attractive, cultured city
Disadvantages: Expensive, students ;)

as important to the city (read: we no longer run it) and relations are, in my experience, generally good as long as you don?t ask for trouble. The city centre?s dominated by the colleges, which still own a large part of the land. These restrict shops and residence ? 90% of the central ward are students. Central roads are mostly closed to traffic ? except buses, cycles and taxis; visitors are strongly recommended to use the park and ride system to avoid the nightmare of one way streets and traffic calming humps (constantly put in and removed). Oxford strikes me as a nice place to live. It has all the facilities of a city, but also plenty of greenery ? Christ Church meadow to the south and University Parks to the north. The attractions will probably appeal most to those who prefer a quiet, academic lifestyle ? excellent libraries ...
