Christopher Brookmyre's Schooldays

Advantages: Great characters, situations familiar to all of us
Disadvantages: Slightly unsatisfying ending

I'm not a big fan of crime novels, but with Jasper Fforde and Christopher Brookmyre making such consistently brilliant efforts at subverting the genre, my resistance is being eroded fairly swiftly. Christopher Brookmyre has established a formidable reputation for Scottish crime thrillers. Full of bodily fluids and lurid characters, they're generally hilarious to read, but shot through with such extreme violence that there's no chance of them ever being left in the 'humour' section. A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil is told entirely in the present tense, and follows two linked story strands - the progress through school of a group of Scottish children from their first day right through to their leaving 'dance', and a murder investigation about twenty years later. Brookmyre's previous works have often made a big deal ...

The Land Of Voodoo!

Advantages: Beautiful,Genuine taste of the Caribbean of the past
Disadvantages: Poverty

Haiti is steeped in tradition and is well known for its association with Voodoo. Port au Prince is home to the Holiday Inn and Presidential Palace (next door) once inhabited by the infamous Papa Doc Duvalier. Port Au Prince is a hustling shanty town of a place compared to any other capital city despite the intervention of the US with aid to the country. There is a stark contrast to the Presidential Palace and the surrounding poverty experienced by many of the local people. The Hills surrounding the capital are lush green and a trip into the hills with the local taxi driver (who you will not be able to rid yourself of for your whole stay)reveals a truly untouched country and echoes the real caribbean of many centuries ago. The other half of the land mass on which Haiti sits (espanol) is the more easily recognised Dominican republic ...

Christopher Robin Goes to Skull

Advantages: nice litle adventure with Pooh and friends
Disadvantages: not quite up to the standrard one associates with the franchise

Poor Pooh! It's the last day of summer, and wanting to have a another grand day of summer playtime with all his friends, he discovers that Christopher Robin cannot come to play. Christopher Robin has left him a note instead, which Pooh and his friends read with great alarm. he has gone to Skull! Oh no! They must save him from the dangers of Skull before something dreadful happens! What follows is a story of friendship and bravery as Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and the gang set out to save their best friend, Christopher Robin. But just where is Skull, and what dangers might this scary sounding place have? They don't know, but they decide to face it all anyway, out of love. This is a feature length film for young fans of Winnie the Pooh, and it's one of the better ones though by no means the best. The animation doesn't have the look ...
