Queen of the Forests

Advantages: Gorgeous location, so much to see and do
Disadvantages: None!

I've lived in the Forest of Dean my whole life (nearly 33 years) and completely taken it for granted! It's really only been in the last few years, since we had our son, that we have started to enjoy our home, with it's breathtaking scenery, abundance of family activities and friendly atmposphere, so I thought I would share it all with you. Brace yourselves, it's a long one! Here comes the history bit! The Forest of Dean was firstly recognised by the Saxons and covers 110 square kilometers or 27000 acres of woodland. It is one of the few remaining Royal forests left in England and has a rich history as a favourite hunting ground for many of our historical kings. The vast amount of woodland is home to many animals and birds, but Forest pride is mainly given to the beautiful fallow deer. There are about 400 here, of which ...

Grubby Pub Grub

Advantages: Serves a nice pint
Disadvantages: Terrible grub

After a busy day shopping at Ikea and M&S and buying nothing as usual we needed a bite or more to eat. Church View Inn is situated in a pleasant setting next to the A5080 main road in North Widnes and not too far from the M62. As the late afternoon sun was beginning to set and my tummy was starting to rumble the Church View Inn did look rather picturesque as we parked the Astra in the amply spaced car park. The pub seemed pleasant and warmly inviting - apart from the red faced local country bumpkin stretched out on the steps of the main entrance and whom I partially had to step over. The pub claims to focus on diners and families and on first impressions this seems to be the case. There are plenty of tables and chairs available to ensure you?re able to find a seat throughout the day. Outside there is a small patio area with umbrellas ...

Temple Church: A Curious Congregation of Knights and Lawyers

Advantages: Excellent original features. Beautiful interior restoration.
Disadvantages: Variable opening hours

establish my credentials. Temple Church is much more than a tourist attraction or pop culture icon. First and foremost, it is a working church and a site of great historical significance, as well as a welcome haven from the drudgery of the City rat race. Although I no longer work in London, business takes me there regularly. I like to visit when I can and spend a few moments soaking in the atmosphere and palpable sense of history imbued in the very fabric of the place. As you can imagine, I take a dim view of noisy tourists intruding on this oasis of solitude and peace. GETTING THERE Temple Church is just off the south side of Fleet Street, almost directly opposite Chancery Lane. Head down the fully pedestrianised Inner Temple Lane (it?s through a stone archway with a Pegasus on each side and two heavy black doors, one of which is ...
