A Roman Retirement Home on the Adriatic

Advantages: Beautiful, atmospheric, good cafes and shops, mostly free
Disadvantages: Those slippy pavements

In the same way that many Brits go off to spend their twilight years in Spain, so the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to retire in the sun. He chose Croatia?s Adriatic coast, Split to be precise, and he had built for him a magnificent palace. In spite of its grandeur it was largely neglected for several hundred years after the Romans quit Dalmatia and this led to its partial decline; however in the seventh century, many living near to the palace sought sanctuary within its walls from invaders, and it is because of this that so much of the palace is still not only standing, but in use for homes and businesses today. When you see how much still remains it is incredible to think that it dates from the fourth century (with some later additions and tweaking). Although the Old Town of Split is crammed with interesting and important ...

Partying at the Palace (ish)

Advantages: Comfortable, clean, good staff
Disadvantages: A few faults, doesnt live up to expectations

This review is about my Christmas party experience at the Strand Palace Hotel. This year, I was in charge of organising our office Christmas party, and, being based in South East London, the department tends to head to Bromley or Greenwich for a meal. But this year we decided to go all out, and go 'up west', and so I came across the Strand Palace hotel on my googlequest and we decided to go posh as well. The booking process was slightly tiresome, seeing as the particular member of staff we made our booking through was somewhat challenged in the brains department. The initial booking process was easy. We booked ourselves in for the three-course carvery meal, and then Channy and I (the office babies) were sent scuttling around collecting everybody's cash (£33 per head). All was sent in when a couple of weeks later, the girl calls me ...

Review of The Strand Palace Hotel, London

No point in Splitting hairs, its a great album!

Advantages: A lot of good tracks with different moods
Disadvantages: A few tracks where the vocals aren't quite clear enough

was pretty AND talented, a rather awesome package in just 1 person. If you didn't like redheads there was Emma Anderson - she of the dark haired persuasion, also singing & playing guitar and owning a pair of legs that go right up to her neck as well writing some of the songs into the bargain. And if you don't like girls there was always the rather gothic Phil King on bass or the sadly now deceased Chris Acland providing rather awesome drums that melded together the very different sound palette that was Lush. So the band had something for everyone, be you boy, girl or small fluffy creature from Alpha Centuri (I think Miki had them covered). Split was their 2nd album release arriving in June of 1994, all songs were either written by Miki or Emma apart from Starlust which was a joint effort. So whats on Split then? 01 - Light From ...
