My husband and I recently took a 2 night city break at the City Hotel, Lubljana (May to be exact). To be honest I was a little nervous and not too sure about what to expect by way of quality and standards. I was pleasantly surprised.

Despite being city centre the traffic around the hotel wasn't too bad, certainly compared to city breaks in places like Rome! The parking around the hotel was a bit limited so if you choose to have a car be warned. If however you are there to see the city there is really no need for one. Transport connections to the airport are good. The staff were friendly and pleasant, the english good.

The City Hotel is a modern , bright hotel in a character building. It has every convenience I could require, sat t.v., internet connection, in-house bars, restaurants and cafes. For a short break it's location was great. You could walk to wherever you want to go in the city. I'd been prepared to have to take taxis, having stayed at Hotels before that claim to be 'centrally located' , but there is definately no other way to describe the location of this hotel. I have to admit that we didn't make use of the inhouse dining facilities, prefering to eat locally in town, but the menu was international and looked impressive. If breakfast was anything to go by however dining in house should be excellent. Breakfast was a sumptious buffet which set you up for the day

I consider the hotel very good value for money. I would warn however that it is worth shopping around for rates. Going to the hotel direct can save you up to €30 -€50 .
why go there?: Its the greenest countrey in europe with over 50% of the land covered in forest, there are wild bears and wolves (i didn't see any) the scenery in amazing, weater good and people freindly
getting there: there is a airport near ljubljana but you can get dirt cheap flights from the uk to salzberg which is 5 hours from ljubljana by train. Trains are cheap and mostly punctual and the veiws from the windows in the Julian alps and soca valley are amazing.
Accomadation: If your travelling around most small towns and villages have plenty budget places to stay (especilly in the alps). I paid around £15-£20 per night in hotels or greatly varying qualtiy. The tourist information office in Ljubliana train station was very helpful in finding cheap accomadation in the city center (the park hotel - cheap but v. basic)
money ...
Advantages: Beautiful scenery, friendly people, lots to see and do, good value for money Disadvantages: Limited range of restaurants (mostly pizza and seafood)
I visited Slovenia in June of 2004 for 8 days, visiting the capital cityLjubljana, Lake Bohinj and Piran. I bought flights with Easyjet, then booked hotels individually on the web and got around by bus.
LJUBLJANA
This is the capital city of Slovenia. It looks very similar to lots of other central European cities, it particularly reminded me of Salzburg. Budget accomodation is limited, I stayed in a hotel in the outskirts of town (a bus ride away) called the 'Bit Center'. It was clean and cheap (about £25 per night for a double). Ljubljana is a lovely place just to wander around, there are lots of interesting buildings and also a big 'cafe culture' scene. At night time, either side of the river that runs through the centre is lined with lively bars and the atmosphere is great.
LAKE BOHINJ
Bohinj is near the better know ...
Advantages: so much to see, do and learn, a beautiful city in the heart of Slovenia Disadvantages: not suitable for party animals and sun, sea, surf and sand seekers!
were on about.
***WEATHER***
The weather is a lot like that of ours. One day it could be sunny the next it could be raining. When I went we were told that it would be hot and sunny, however on arrival I realised that my skirts and t-shirts would not be much use to me. Its best to go prepared for any kind of weather here. During the winter months the temperatures can drop to 3 degrees but can rise to 21 degrees during the summer months.
Maribor is a popular place for skiers during the winter months and is the 2nd largest City in Slovenia (after Ljubljana).
***WHERE WE STAYED***
There are many hotels to choose from in Ljubljana we stayed at the Grand Hotel Union. The hotel has a rating of 4* and is situated in the centre of town. The area is quiet but is close to all of the restaurants, bars and shops. The staff were amazing ...
