Luxembourg is the capital of the Grand Duchy. It is steeped in history with a rich, troubled past, but a future that has hope and optimism. There is a true sense of culture and the people of Luxembourg are very proud to live there. It has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, but not everyone speaks English so if you get lost it is a bit of a problem finding someone to ask the directions that understands you.
Luxembourg has a large mixture of different cultures more than 33% of the capital's population is of foreign origin. Luxembourg's motto is 'Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sin' which means "We want to remain what we are" this sums up the originality of Luxembourg.
There are many historical and cultural sites to see in Luxembourg. I enjoyed looking at the many intriguing and beautiful places. It was fun discovering the history of Luxembourg you wouldn't expect there to be much to discover
in such a small City, but there is. Luxembourg has many legends and anecdotes worth relating. If you like to relax and pamper yourself then you can indulge in the beautiful sites that Luxembourg offers. It is perfect for couples wanting a romantic weekend together. My husband and I found Luxembourg such a beautiful city that was both elegant and stylish.
You might be surprised to hear that Luxembourg only measures 57klms wide and 82klm long and is the third smallest Country in Europe. Believe me it is a small City, but there is so much to do and see you will not be bored.
It was fun exploring the many caves and tunnels. It is this structure of caves and tunnels measuring 17 km that is known as Casemates. Inside Casemates there are many spiral staircases, small passageways and man made chambers large enough for small concerts and plays. Unfortunately we didn't see a play whilst we were there, but we said if we ever go again that we will see a show.
Luxembourg is also one of the richest Cities in the world and has grown into a banking and administrative centre. Luxembourg has modern characteristics, but also historical characteristics. It is known for its World Heritage status. You can easily walk the distance of Luxembourg and visit the many attractions on foot. The tourist office organises guided walks throughout the summer months. There are numerous excursions you could take such as, Vianden Castle, Wiltz Festival Town or the Abbey Town of Echternach on the advanced road, rail or coach system.
You can explore the Place d'Armes, Avenue Emile Reuter, Boulevard Royale, Rue Philippe II and Avenue de la Porte. If you like night life then you will love Luxembourg because it comes to life at night and has some great pubs and clubs. You could spend your day relaxing, sightseeing, eating and then in the night time treat yourself to a night out. You will enjoy the many alcoholic drinks that Luxembourg offers. You could try wine - tasting in the Southeast or visit some breweries to taste some of the region's alcoholic beverage in Diekirch and Wiltz. Among the many activities you might chose you could take a walk or train ride through the Pétrusse Valley underneath the Adolphe and the Passerelle bridges. If you enjoy sight seeing then Luxembourg has picturesque gorges, bridges, charming buildings, forests, brooks and wonderful rock formations. You will be spoilt for choice with sites including Ville's enchanting square, the Place d'Armes.
If you enjoy eating in different places then you will love the vibrant cafes and restaurants near the river in an area called the Grund that you can get to via a lift that will take you downwards past the old rock. If you can't afford to stay in a luxury hotel then there are plenty of youth hostels and from what I've heard they are very nice to stay in even though they might not be luxurious. Plus they are a lot cheaper so if you can live without the luxury of a posh hotel then you will enjoy a night in a youth hostel.
Whilst in Luxembourg you won't want to miss sampling the food. You could work up an appetite by rock climbing or water sports. Luxembourg has plenty of restaurants and food places you can even dine al fresco in Luxembourg.
Treat yourself to the food at one of the cafes and you will be able to indulge in many tempting treats such as a raclette grill that combines cheese and electric barbecue-ing. Ingredients include; smoked hams, bacons, sausage, peppers, onions and mushrooms cooked on the top griddle, whilst the cheeses needed for this meal are grilled to a scrumptious gooey state in small shovels by the naked element below. Once prepared the hot cheesy mound is scooped from the shovel onto a boiled potato which is then combined with the other ingredients to taste. I'm sure you can skip the diet for a few days and just enjoy the food which is delicious.
There really is something for everyone. Luxembourg is a historical place of beauty. There are so many sites to see in Luxembourg that you will be spoilt for choice. It is an excellent choice for a short or long term break and you can't go far wrong if you decide to visit Luxembourg.
