Location
We arrived into Stockholm at around 2pm from a train from Oslo. The hostel is within easy walking distance of the main train station. Although it is only a five or tem minute walk from the train station the directions we recieved from hostelworld were not the most clear and we ended up going the long way round to get to the hostel.
The hostel is located just off a busy shopping street and from the train station you need to go down a couple of levels of roads to get to the main street.
However things are a bit more complex if arriving by ferry or air and it is avisable to simply get a taxi from either to the main train station or the hostel itself.
Our welcome
We arrived at the hostel and our welcome was one of the most pleasant I have experienced anywhere I have stayed. The lady behind reception took a good five-ten minutes giving us directions around the city and where to go for this and that. We were also presented with a highly detailed map. Within reception you can also pick up maps of the outer regions of Stockholm and vouchers to get into attractions cheaper.
The room
Most of the hostels rooms are located underground, We went down a small flight of stairs and were showed to our room. First impressions were that you could tell it was a hostel as it wasnt amazing but most importantly it was clean. We had elected to be in a 6 bed mixed dorm and the room couldnt actually take any more beds in it as the 3 beds were crammed tightly together. However I know I am staying in a hostel so it is the thing I expect and as i say the room was clean, the door had a lock on it and the bed was comfy (although my pillow wasnt!)
The room also had lockers, a sink and a mirror. Each bed has its own reading light.
I don't know why but each morning we were they we both woke up with a severely dry throat and had to drink quite a lot of water to get rid of it. Also because the room is underground the room doesn't benefit from any natural light and it was impossible to get up early in the morning without the aid of an alarm. However on the otherhand this was because the room was nice and dark and it didnt have a common hostel problem of noise.
The hostel facilities
The hostel provides free internet with 4 computers located near recpetion. This is 'limited' to 30 mins, but in reality could see you sending all day on it if the need arises.
The hostel is one of the few places that I stayed in that actually provides a kitchen. In the kitchen was a microwave, Cooker and fridge complete with all the necessary cooking essentials. On top of the fridge was a left food container which if any food was left in the kitchen could be claimed by any guest - we managed to get a massive bag of sweets! The hostel was provides breakfast for a small supplement. I didnt do this so dont know what you get but tea and coffee is left in the kitchen and can be drunk all day by all guests.
The common room also has a TV with SKY and endless amounts of books for people to read or swap a book. There was also board games and cards for people to use. The hostel had 6 showers for guests to use and each worked perfectly. The showers were not divided into a boys/girls side but each had a locking door and therefore it felt safe to be sharing with the opposite sex. There were also six toilets devised in a similar fashion.
The hostel also has a Washing machine and tumble drier and charges 60sek/load
Room details
The hostel provides the following room types
Twin private - 350 6 Bed mixed - 210 10 Bed mixed - 195 18 Bed mixed - 175
All prices are in Swedish Kroner. The current exchange rate is 11.5 to 1 GBP. However when we went it was around 12.25 to 1GBP. The private room comes with a TV in the room.
Local amenities
Centrally located and near to everything that you might need to do in stockholm. We found that walking around the Island of Djuurgarden was the most enjoyable. We luckily found our way onto the island for sunset and this gave amazing views of around the city. This is a park island and allows you to wander around the wildlife while watching an endless amount of joggers pass you. The island also has a fun fair on it which was closed while we were there.
However a walk round the old town and parliament is equally worth a relaxing stroll
Stockholm is also famous for its nightlife, However on a travellers budget this was a step to far for me to do, but many bars are located near by or by getting on the metro for a couple of stops. The metro runs until 11pm.
Verdict.
A good hostel in the middle of Stockholm that doesnt try to high form the fact it is a hostel. I would defiatley stay here again if in the city on a tight budget.
