A city centre cinema in York

Advantages Location, nice atmosphere, great arthouse films
Disadvantages Limited choice, pricey in the bar
The City Screen Picturehouse is located right in the centre of York, on the riverside just off Coney Street. It's part of the Picturehouse chain, and gets in everything from international arthouse, to classic films, to the latest blockbusters.
The cinema has three screens and a basement live performance venue, along with a riverside bar with spectacular views. It doesn't have the best number of options, but it's by far the most varied of York's cinemas. I've seen the Muppets and The Morris Movie there, films as opposite as you can get, and enjoyed the experience for both. The auditoria are nice sizes, not too big without being claustrophobic, and the seats are comfortable.Prices are slightly higher than the competition, both for the cinema and for the bar, but still not extravagant. It's a bit tucked away behind a church, but extremely convenient for the main shopping streets.
For arthouse cinema it's the only place to go in York, which is no hardship as it's excellent. For blockbusters, you're probably better off checking out the competition on Blossom Street. Still, it's a nicer atmosphere here, and a pleasant night out if you throw in a drink or a meal in the bar.
