The Midland Hotel, Manchester

Advantages: Recently refitted
Disadvantages: They forgot the health club!

Recently stayed in The Midland for one night, and was pleasantly surprised by the recent refurbishment it's undergone. Having not been to this hotel for a couple of years, the changes have really breathed some life back into what had been a crumbling relic. The room was very nice, a good size, and well fitted in terms of what was available and space, as was the bathroom. One complaint I would have was that the mini-bar automatically charges you for anything moved - which isn't very good if you're other half likes to fiddle with stuff. I didn't dine in either of the two hotel restaurants - The French and The Colony - but they both looked ok, and the buffet breakfast, served in The Colony, was the best I've had at any hotel for a good few years. A good selection of cereals and fruit as well as a selection of standard hot items, which ...

Midland Strainline *UPDATE*

Advantages: Frequent trains, free tea and coffee
Disadvantages: Frequent delays, high ticket prices, uncomfortable Turbostars

* NOTE: This route has been taken over by Stagecoach as East Midlands Trains. * I have been travelling on Midland Mainline almost every working day for over five years from my home in Leicestershire to work in London. I have seen it all. When the service works well, and you are aboard one of their High Speed Trains (HSTs) as opposed to their Turbostars, it is a good way of getting about. For the occasional journey to the Midlands, and now to Manchester, I would recommend it. But sadly, a lot of the time it is a complete shambles. Trains are routinely late (and that means more than 10 minutes late in railway terms) or cancelled. It has been getting worse. This is not just my impression. All rail companies must publish performance statistics, including reliability (percentage of trains cancelled) and on-time performance ...

East Midlands Airport

Advantages: Easily accessed, not too busy
Disadvantages: Not a huge range of destinations

East Midlands Airport is a regional airport located in Castle Donington in Derbyshire. There are flights available to many European destinations, as well as Egypt, USA (Florida) and the Caribbean with charter airlines. I have flown from this airport many times and it is my favourite airport mainly due to it's location, ease of access and relaxed atmosphere. It is easily accessed by car from the M1 (Junction 23 and 23A) or the A50 which is the road I use when travelling from Staffordshire. I live around 50 miles from the airport but the A50 is a relatively quiet road so it's a nice 40 minute drive and I can start my holiday. I find it's easiest to travel to by car but there are local rail links and the airport can be reached from Loughborough, Derby and Nottingham railway stations, depending on where in the country you are ...
