Going down to the "Godowns"?

Advantages: Pleasant surroundings, good food, central location
Disadvantages: Not exactly authentic Singapore

...last visit in the 1980s. Clarke Quay, quite simply, is an area which is almost unrecognisable these days. Named after Andrew Clarke, the second governor of Singapore, and sometime governor of The Straits Settlements in the late 19th century, it was once, along with nearby Boat Quay, the epicentre of Singapore's world of commerce. River trade moved out of town a long time ago, however, and the area, much polluted by the late 20th century, underwent ...
...(warehouses) have been renovated and Clarke Quay is now a leisure based complex.

Aesthetically it's a pleasing environment, although hardly "authentic Singapore". Its London equivalent would probably be St Katherine's Dock - reminiscent of days gone by but very much a development for the tourists. There's contrasting traditional and innovative features: the godowns have been preserved, although painted in a myriad of colours, ... more

Historically Known

Advantages: enjoyable and sunny.
Disadvantages: maybe a ripoff for locals

Clarke Quay was historically known for its commercial position as a trading grounds for merchants in the earlier part of 19th century. It was along this side of the river that Sir Stamford Raffles sailed into what has been acclaimed to a natural port and harbour, to discover the island of Singapore. He felt so sure of its success as a method of buisness and trade that he traded some island in Indonesia with the Dutch for Singapore. Anyway, if you ...
...has become an entertainment haven for the food and beverage industries that also have exhorbitant price lists. Loads of clubs and pubs litter the sides of the river in an organised fashion (I would not expect anything less out of the Singaporean government, especally when it comes to town planning!) In the day, the eateries remain popular as it is close to the densely built-up central business district of Singapore. The tourist attractions are a ...

Pan Pacific Singapore

Advantages: Great location, good facilities and service; and comfortable rooms!
Disadvantages: A bit of a walk to the closest MRT (City Hall)

Centrally loacted, the hotel is very close to numerous recreational and commercial places. In fact, Pan Pacific Singapore is within walking distance of many of Singapore's historic landmarks, such as the Padang, stage to some of the most significant national events, the Cenotaph and the commemorative landing site of Sir Stamford Raffles - founder of modern Singapore. It is also close to Singapore's historic, cultural and entertainment areas, such as CHIJMES, the Boat Quay, Clarke Quay, Robertson Walk and the new Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay. The hotel is also connected to Millenia Walk and Suntec City shopping complexes. You must try the Hai Tien Lo for exquisite Cantonese, Keyaki Japanese restaurant for authentic Japanese food. Its amazing!! Full-length glass windows with views of Singapore's city skyline or the Marina Bay ...

Great central Singapore location hotel

Advantages: Good central location
Disadvantages: None

. Another good best feature is the view from the the higher storey rooms. From our window we could see a fascinating blend of old and new Singapore - from tall office blocks to low and quaint Victorian era colonial churches, white painted and carefully preserved. But the best aspect of the hotel is its excellent location. Within easy walking distance are a number of Singapore's excellent features - the Clarke Quay and Boat Quay, various Museums, and a number of good shopping centres such as Raffles City and the Funan IT Mall - great if you want anything to do with computers. This is right next door. The hotel has its main restaurant, Coleman's Cafe, but in Singapore it's great to explore all the eateries in the area - and there are a lot round here including a food court in the basement of the Funan IT Mall, and a McDonalds near ...
