Clifford's Tower, York

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

Clifford's Tower stands on the top of a green, grassy mound of earth right in the heart of York's town centre. It has the appearance of a miniature castle, but it is actually all that now remains of the former keep of the castle that once stood on the level ground below here. This site at ground level is now occupied by three different large buildings, two of which form the York Castle Museum and the other is now used as the town's court building.
...reminders of the town's past. Clifford's Tower would have been, and still is today, one of the few vantage points within the walled in part of the town that offers an elevated view beyond these walls.

Access to Clifford's Tower is via 55 very steep steps that have been dug deep into the grassy hillside. Looking at Clifford's Tower from the bottom of these steps it is apparent that it would be almost impossible to reach the tower by ... more

Clifford's Tower-the Eye of York, the eye of history

Advantages: Convenient location, informative historical site with magnificent views.
Disadvantages: No audio guide available. No disability and toilet facilities.

...City of 2007. Clifford's Tower is also known as the Eye of York and is a popular site for tourists from around the world. Location Clifford's Tower stands in the centre of York as a proud symbol of the power of England's medieval kings. It is located on top of a green, grassy hill and can be seen from a distance. Climbing 55 very steep steps and with a sweeping panorama of York, it isn't hard to understand why Clifford's Tower is called the Eye of ...
...History Clifford's Tower takes its name from Roger de Clifford, who following the Battle of Boroughbridge in 1322 was hung in chains from its battlements, when he was executed for treason against Edward II. Originally there was a castle built by William the Conqueror in 1068 to subdue the rebels of the north. After twice being burned to the ground Henry III rebuilt a typical French castle in the 13th century. A Frenchman called Henry of Reyns may ...

Holmlea Guesthouse- an acceptable B&B in York

Advantages: reasonable price and free internet entrance.
Disadvantages: no lock in bathroom and no shower in peak time.

card details as a guarantee. A staff member told us that there would be no room available until 5pm. We were also given the code for the door entry system and told where we could find the door key. Location It was not difficult to find and is located in a quiet road. Driving there just took 10 minutes after we reached the border of York from south. We were allocated a guest parking permit adjacent to Holmlea. For guests arriving by train it is approximately a 15-20 minute walk from York station. It is a ten minute walk to Clifford?s Tower and York Castle Museum. There are pubs, restaurants and shops nearby. One pub called The Swan seemed particularly popular. My husband really enjoyed it because of the variety of real ales and ciders. Checking in Although we were told to check in by 5pm at the earliest, we arrived at about 2pm ...

Duchess or no Duchess You have to Go

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

York! What a fabulous place. Of course you have to visit London but to me York is the next best place. There is so much to see and do so here's what to do but first, if you are travelling by car do use the park and ride facilities and save yourself a lot of hassle parking. Walk down the Shambles and dream of yesteryear. Visit the Minister..fantastic. take your children to the Yorvic Centre for a unique historical experience. Go shopping. Take a river trip. vistit the Treasurer's House. Go to the Train Musuem....Brilliant. Do not miss the Castle Museum and Cliffords Tower. Got the message? Yes, York is a must. ...

Miss It-Miss Out!

Advantages: You'll never be bored
Disadvantages: lots of walking involved-wear comfy shoes

For a City break York is the place to come. Its special blend of architecture and historical places dates back to the Romans. Within its beautiful walls stands the majestic York Minster with its Rose window, and all around the great cathedral are nestled beautiful paved pedestrian streets, including the world famous Shambles which was originally a street of butchers shops. Ther are lots of museums to visit that really you need at least a week to see all that York has to offer. The Railway Museum, Kirks Museum sat in the shadow of Cliffords Tower (a stunning fortress on a hill) The York Dungeon and of course the famous Jorvic Centre which depicts Viking life in the form of a Viking village with all the authentic smells and sounds. York not only has all this and more to offer but its a lovely shopping centre and there is lot to visit ...
