Clifton Arms Hotel

Advantages: The Best Hotel in Lytham St Annes.
Disadvantages: Whoa! is it pricey!

This Hotel is in the prime position in Lytham. It faces the 2 or so miles of Lytham Green. There are scenic views of the Welsh hills and the Pennines in the distance and views of the Ribble Estuary. Close by is the famous windmill. The hotel takes its name from the Clifton family. They were the main landowners in the area. There are many references to the Clifton family locally. Their family seat was Lytham Hall. This is open to the public on occasion. It is now owned by an insurance company. Its successor, the current hotel, was built in 1840 on West Beach. In 1875 all buildings comprising the hotel were raised to the same height. Clearly the hotel was built at the height ...

Mansfield Park

Advantages: Erm.....none?
Disadvantages: Too many to mention!

Well, I'm not really sure where to start with this! I guess I should start right from the beginning - Mansfield Park. This TV dramatisation of a Jane Austin novel. I'll give you a basic plot overview: Mansfield Park is the home of a wealthy family, the Bertram family. They take in a young and less well-off relative to give her the best education, and all the good advantages of being well-off. This lucky girl was Fanny Price. The poor girl is completely up-rooted from everything she knows, friends and family, house etc. You follow her through a series of events, including having to hold herself against the wealthy, and the poor and all about the sexual politics in the new world she is becoming accustomed to. Now, for the DVD. I'll start with the actors, some of which I knew, and some I'd never heard of before, and after this ...

Clifton Park Museum, Rotherham

Advantages: Plenty to see, free entry
Disadvantages: Closed on fridays

Clifton Park museum is located on the fringe of Rotherham town centre. The museum is housed in Clifton House, a Grade 11 listed building dating from 1793. This house was designed by John Carr, a prominent architect of that time and it was the family home of the Walker family. The original occupier was Joshua Walker and his wife. Joshua's father had made his fortune in the local steel industry. Following Joshua's death this house was passed through various generations of his family and remained in their possession for almost 200 years. Clifton House stood in 70 acres of grounds and the majority of this land came into the ownership of Rotherham Borough Council in 1891, who opened up this area as a public recreation area called Clifton Park. Shortly after this date the Council also acquired the house and in 1893 they opened this house as ...
