Clifton Park Museum, Rotherham

Advantages: Plenty to see, free entry
Disadvantages: Closed on fridays

Clifton Park museum is located on the fringe of Rotherham town centre. The museum is housed in Clifton House, a Grade 11 listed building dating from 1793. This house was designed by John Carr, a prominent architect of that time and it was the family home of the Walker family. The original occupier was Joshua Walker and his wife. Clifton House stood in 70 acres of grounds and the majority of this land came into the ownership of Rotherham Borough Council in 1891, who opened up this area as a public recreation area called Clifton Park. Shortly after this date the Council also acquired the house and in 1893 they opened this house as a museum.

This museum closed in December 2002 and reopened in January 2005 following a £3 million (4.5 ... more

A little bit of the countryside

Advantages: small, cheap, plenty of countryside
Disadvantages: not a city, so limited amenities

I've visited Rotherham many times over the years as I lived in a village on the outskirts, between Rotherham and Doncaster. It is only a small market town which has changed over the years. It is a metropolitan borough council in South Yorkshire, and is in the heart of an industrialized area based mainly on coal, iron and steel works. But the town centre itself is away from all that, has been recently pedestrianised and rejuvinated to make it quite appealing. The church in the town centre is a focal point of the town, as is Clifton Park, again set in the centre and including tennis courts and Clifton Park Museum. There is a shopping arcade adn market, and a theatre, Rotherham Civic. Parking is ample, though you have to pay for it. There are a range of clubs, bowling, pubs and bars and a good range of restaurants all in short ...

More than just Magna

Advantages: See op
Disadvantages: No cinema

Leisure Centre still attracts more than 400,000 people a year. <<Clifton Park>> Uhhhh, I love this place!! It?s a 56-acre site (about a five minute walk from the town centre) surrounding Clifton Park Museum, and it?s beautiful. If I?m bored I often take a walk to the park. It was opened in 1891 by the Prince of Wales and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. As well as a children?s play area, there is also a memorial garden and a Bandstand. The Rotherham Show is held here every year, attracting around 60,000 visitors. In the grounds there is also a bowling green and tennis courts. The Museum is located in Clifton House (Built in 1783) and unfortunately is closed until September 2004 due to redevelopments. It has been Rotherham?s Museum since 1893.
