A SUPERB TRIBUTE TO A GREAT MAN

Advantages: A Lasting Tribute to a Great British Engineer. A National Landmark. Beautiful Setting.
Disadvantages: That I do not Live Closer to it!

...Britain and of course the Clifton Suspension Bridge. I also wanted to see the Brunel 200 exhibition in the maritime Centre building, which I believe finishes in October.

THE IDEA IS HATCHED

When Brunel launched the Great Britain from its current home, in July 1843, the Avon Gorge was without a bridge, although in a sense it had already been in the "planning stage" since 1754. A wine trader by the name of William ...
...crossing the Avon Gorge from Clifton Down to Leigh Woods.

The mystery is quite why Mr Vicks should want to see such crossing built. At the time of his death, Clifton Down amounted to a couple of houses, an ancient church and farmland. Leigh Woods was just that - woodland.

Fifty years later and Clifton's fortunes were on the up. Clifton had become THE fashionable place to live, terraces rivalling those in Bath were being ... more

...off the 8/8A bus at Clifton Village or Christ Church, Clifton. The Bridge is a short level walk from either of these bus stops. COST Today it costs just 50p to cross in a light vehicle and the bridge takes on average £1500 per day in tolls. Pedestrians are not charged HISTORY The Clifton Suspension Bridge, the symbol of the city of Bristol is a Grade 1 Listed Building and is a wonderful place to visit if you can spare the time. Spanning the beautiful ...
...wonders of modern times. Standing on the top of the bridge in the centre of th gorge you are left wondering how 150 years ago someone could possibly conceive building something this grand to cross the enormous gorge - the answer is someone who liked a drink! A Bristol wine merchant left a legacy to fund the building of a bridge over the Gorge. The plans for a bridge were conceived in two competitions, the first competition in 1829 when no entries ...

bristol

Advantages:

Bristol is a v. pleasant city which can get a bit blocked by traffic. St Marys Redcliffe is one of the most attractive churches in the United Kingdom. It lies a little way out of town but it is worth the effort of walking there. Many people visit the SS Great Britain in the renovated dock area. The boat houses an interesting exhibition of the ships life. It is worth a walk to Temple Meads station. The Victorian architecture is superb. It is a good centre for visiting Bath and the Mendips. And do not for get the clifton suspension bridge. ...

Avon Calling!

Advantages: Beautiful views of the Bridge and the Avon Gorge; free wifi; great terrace
Disadvantages: A bit pricy for food and drink

The Avon Gorge Hotel is in a great position ,as it sounds, overlooking the Avon gorge! It is in Clifton, the posh bit of Bristol and definitely the bit you'd want to stay in you were only in bristol for Touristy things, and didn't need, say to be right in the centre for business or something. So you can see the famous Clifton suspension bridge - some rooms look directly onto it and you pay a bit more for those I think. The others face onto the street, but it's a nice street! Rooms are not huge, but comfortable and adequately sized with that "nice hotel" furniture you get - light wood, stripes, dark blue and deep reds in the fabric, plush blue carpets. Standard but nice. Expect to pay about £120 for a double room B&B - they do have some weekend deals that work out cheaper. They have cots and highchairs and are OK about babies ...
