(+) All round good pick for those wanting Caribbean on a budget. Great beach! (-) Probably not quite up to 5* standards like some other hotels, but we didn't mind!
Advantages: 24 hour bars Disadvantages: No drinks facilities in rooms-a bit inconvenient
...We Stayed at the ClubAmigo Atlantico from 17th-31st July 2005 with Sunset Holidays, a subsidiary of Thomas cook.
The stay cost a total of £1200 for two of us on a 3 star, all inclusive basis.
We had a great holiday, but I must note that to see real Cuba (which was not easy to do because of lack of public transport) you had to get out of the hotel and try and book trips: unfortunately with the travel companies.
Although we had a good time, there was an odd atmosphere because of the Cuban guards everywhere, who segregated the Cuban guests from the English and Canadians. Furthermore, we were allowed to use their facilities, but they weren't allowed to use ours. We think this caused some resentment.
I will now discuss the hotel under some relevant sub headings so you can get the lowdown, without having to read the whole of my...

...has it's own band which entertains you and they put on fashion shows to amuse you, there isn't much in the way of a night club.
The tour operators in conjunction with the hotel offer excursions including a trip to Havana. Personally I would recommend a trip to Naranjo Bay to swim with the Dolphis and enjoy the Sea-Lion show.
Although there isn't much to do in Guardalavaca itself, especially off season, you can take a horse and cart ride with one of the locals who will take you to the nearby market where you can pick up some hand made crafts. It's amazing what they make out of coconut shells and banana leaves.
We found the locals to be friendly and helpful, they may not have a lot but they live well and take care of each other.
As we were getting ready to leave we left our toilettries and medicine's as they needed them more than...

...Guardalavaca is purpose built resort about an hour's drive from Holguin airport. It features the hotels Atantico, Guardalavaca and the newest La Brise. Staying at the Guardalavaca Hotel was good value at US$45.00 per night all inclusive but for an extra US$30.00 La Brise is a better choice for the luxury traveller.
In the Guardalavaca, the rooms are comfortable and all are en suite. The bathroom has a shower. Noisy air conditioning units dominate the window but turning them off is not an option. Being inclusive means that you can drink enough to drown out the sound. The portable tv picks up US channels and some European satelite channels but not UK channels.
Most of the fellow guests are French Canadians with some Mexicans and Europeans. Thomas Cook US$ dollar travellers cheques were readily accepted in reception and a 3% commision...
