Austria´s Capital city Vienna has offered only two golf courses until 1995: the GC Wien Freudenau 18 hole course and the Wienerberg 9 holes. Although there are several courses within an hours drive, Vienna lacked a decent golf resort which it finally got, when former agricultural grounds in the northern suburb of Süßenbrunn were transformed into an 18 hole championship-course (Par 72) with an adjoining public compact-course with 6 holes (all Par 3) and possible 18 tee-boxes...
The GC Danube layout is similar to Irish links courses like Ballybunion, the "dunes" consist of dugout material from the 9 small lakes that serve as irrigational ponds, the rough along the manicured fairways can be a real hazard for occasional slicers and hookers. What it truly shares with Irish or Scottish links courses is a gusting northwesterly wind...
My favourite holes are the par 3 # 2,7 and 17, all of which bring water into play and their greens are sloping towards bunkers and ponds. The fourth par 3 (# 14) I hate best, because its green is so close to # 16, that I happened to score the one-and-only hole-in-one of my career with an erratic shot right into the cup of # 16 ;-((
To play a round costs you some 30 GBP, that is around € 48. Carts, trolleys and clubs are available for rent, the pros of GC Danube offer fine instruction, one of them is a Brit from Leeds...
Reservations for tee times (phone +43 1 256 8282) are compulsory and soft spikes as well all around the resort. To mention the rest of the amenities: there is hotel accomodation, an open-air pool, several tennis and badminton courts, sauna, steam bath and solarium. If you happen to stay somewhere in the city centre you may use metro U1 and bus 25A to get to the course, travel time is around 40 minutes. On weekends there are tournaments throughout the season from March til November, but normal play is possible all year round, just inquire about frozen greens or snow drifts on the fairways in winter (on the average you can count on 350 days a year of possible play). Non golfing wifes who do not go for tennis and such have the opportunity to walk along fairway # 1, tike a right turn and find their luck on horsebacks.

A "Groschli" in Ciao UK... How nice! (For those interested: "Groschen" used to be an Austrian coin, before EURO; I guess we'll have to call you "Centlis" from now on...)
