Advantages: Value for money, inspirational for weekend days out. Disadvantages: Many properties close up during winter months
, Lincolnshire, and Leicestershire). However during the winter months, many attractions do close up, or only the grounds are open, and so from the end of October until March, there may not be many places available to visit.
Without question there will be many National Trust properties near enough to everyone. The National Trust states that they... "care for 28 castles, 215 houses and gardens, 150 museums, 127 factories and mines, 57 villages, 47 dovecotes, 25 medieval barns, 78 mills, 19 pubs, 12 lighthouses, 31 nature reserves, 704 miles of coastline and 600,000 acres of countryside" - there is enough for a few years membership there.
In my own area I have already visited ClumberPark near Worksop several times. This is a huge park with plenty of activity for everyone, and the grounds itself are open all year around so it is great ...
Advantages: A great day out Disadvantages: Can be busy at popular times
situated in North Nottinghamshire near Worksop. It is well signposted from junction 30 of the M1 motorway (11 miles from exit) and from the A1/A57 at Retford.
ClumberPark is an excellent day out, especially during the summertime when the weather is nice, but it can equally as impressive when there is snow on the ground and the lake is frozen. It can however work out quite expensive for non National Trust members like myself and I have sometimes parked just outside the Park and walked into the Park on foot for free or parked in Clumber village nearby. ...
Advantages: Picturesque, Peaceful, Historic Disadvantages: Largely Private, Difficult to get close to.
As a lover of the Countryside I am incredibly fortunate living where I do in Sheffield. Just a few miles to the West lies the Peak District National Park and some of the finest Countryside in England. Of equal distance to the East however lies another Gem of an area, known as the Dukeries of North Nottinghamshire.
The Dukeries is so named because it contains the Ducal Homes of five different families, all within very close proximity of one another. These include ClumberPark and House, the principal seat of the Duke of Newcastle, Thoresby Hall, the principal seat of the Duke of Kingston, and later the Manvers family from that same family, and Worksop Manor the principal seat of the Duke of Norfolk. Each of these Estates is magnificent within their own right and ClumberPark is now owned and managed by the National Trust.
