Advantages: Lots to do, nice atmosphere Disadvantages: Hotels are rather expensive
...My husband & I visited Geneva last month & loved it. It's just such a big city with so much to do. We went to the Reformation museum & Red Cross museum, but there are also art museums, a watch museum and others. Cathedral is worth a visit- we went to a concert in it which was a great experience. Also visited some sights to do with Jean Calvin the Christian reformer - such as the Reformation Wall. Went on a cruise on Lake Geneva which was lovely. Make sure you take a swimming cossie too cos at "Geneve Plage" there are outdoor pools and a section of the lake that you can swim in if you want. The tram is a good way to get around the city. A little further out are the alps which you can visit by coach.
Hotels & restaurants can tend to be a bit pricey, but we stayed in "Hotel Central" which is reasonably priced and a nice hotel.

Advantages: Free bike hire Disadvantages: Need a car to get around
...I flew to La Rochelle last year, for a week in August. In my seven days, I didn't really visit many places - but I stayed in La Rochelle quite a lot.
Where we stayed:
At the south of La Rochelle is Les Minimes, the world's largest marina. I stayed there in a hotel called "Fast Hotel", a 2* 50€ per night place. The room was tiny, floor filthy and breakfast was expensive.
Transport:
You can get to La Rochelle by plane, train, car or boat.
Train: Take the TGV from Paris or the TER from Bordeaux.
Boar: From Île d'Aîx, Île d'Oleron, Île de Ré.
Car: Various routes from around France.
Plane: From Southampton, or Nice. Now from Birmingham.
Around La Rochelle you can hire a bike or a car.
Bikes: Free for 2 hours then 2€ an hour after. They take your passport (or national ID card) as a refundable deposit. The state of the bikes...

Advantages: Lovely beach....the south of France, dahling Disadvantages: Not much to do without a car
...If you want to bemuse a foreigner, send them to the bit of France from which I've just returned. Not satisfied with the usual 'one name per place' rule, you'll find references to the areas of Vias, Vias Plage and Vias sur Mer (on post cards, in brochures, on the internet) but, confusingly, only 2 different parts of town, the touristy end and the old French bit.
****** Travel
We drove Manchester to Liverpool, flew Liverpool to Nimes, taxied to Nimes town centre, caught a train to Agde and then taxied to Vias Plage. Travelling days were long - in excess of 8 hours - but if you live in other parts of the UK, or are happy to pay a little more for your flights you can reduce the trip quite significantly by flying to Montpellier and then grabbing a cab from there. We chose the fun long way round instead, and paid £100 each for return...
