I have to be perfectly honest here and say that I hadn't exactly planned a trip to the Colchester Natural History museum but rather it was through 'divine intervention' that I ended up taking a nosey about the place. In other words, I was out shopping and had taken the scenic route past the ... Read review

House Of The Dead - Interactive Family Tour

Advantages: free, easy access, the castle is opposite
Disadvantages: dull, motheaten, needs more interactivity

...planned a trip to the Colchester Natural History museum but rather it was through 'divine intervention' that I ended up taking a nosey about the place. In other words, I was out shopping and had taken the scenic route past the castle to get to a litte new age shop down one of the numerous side streets and it had started thrashing down with rain. I would also admit to having no clue of this place's existence before the heavens did indeed open up and ...
...to the far more interesting Colchester Castle, the biggest Norman keep ever built, which is literally less than a minute away. My advice would be to plan a trip to the castle which isn't free, but won't break the bank either(£3.60 for adults, £2.60 for children aged 5-15 and under 5s free) and pop in here on the way out. Getting here is dead easy by both car, bus and train. Expect a 10 minutes walk if you come by train whilst most buses into Colchester ... more

A little bit of everything

Advantages: Historic, modern, fast paced and full of unique people
Disadvantages: can get crowded and loud

at the leisure centre, that also doubles up to put on concerts, host sports events and other social activities. There is also a skate park there for the more adventurous among us. The high street and centre of town can get very busy throughout the week with many students in term time. With all of the quality shops and huge selection of restaurants and pubs serving food it is a haven for the young. For those of a more mature nature there are also a vast number of quieter pubs and eateries, not to mention a massive selection of foreign foods. For the night life lovers there are a number of nightclubs including Route, The Hippodrome and many theme bars. No shortage of taxies or a kebab to soak up the beer either! For the art and history lovers among you Colchester houses the Mercury theatre, the museum of natural history (located opposite the castle ...

Colchester

Advantages: Has Everything You need
Disadvantages: Bit of an under-rated town

you. There are many museums situated around Colchester. In the grounds of Colchester Castle Park can be found Hollytrees museum where the history of Colchester can be found accompanied by photographs of past Colchester. Across the road from Colchester Castle can be found the natural history museum full of information and fun things to do for adults as well as children. In the centre of Colchester near the library can be found Tymperleys clock museum. All three museums are worth a visit and can be enjoyed by all ages and the best thing about them is, they are all free entry. As well as the historical parts of Colchester there is also the wide variety of shops to be visited. Ranging from clothes to household objects everything you need can be found in Colchester. The town is a friendly place and help is always at hand and very welcoming ...

Review of Colchester in General

A Traditional Seaside Town

Advantages: Good Basic Local Amenities, Centralised Attractions
Disadvantages: Small, A Little Boring, Roadworks, Few Places of Interest

interesting to do and my son sat quietly in his pushchair while I wandered round having a nosey and a read. The good thing about this castle I found was the disabled access meaning pushchairs and wheelchair users could benefit from all the exhibits on offer via a little lift. Nearby to Colchester Castle there was a Natural History Museum, the Tymperleys Clock Museum and The Hollytrees Museum so a family could enjoy an interesting day out with some attractions offering discounted joint admission rates too. Also in Colchester was a good variety of shops to have a nosey around including both big names like Wilkinsons and smaller places like a lovely little craft store that I now hate having realised the swine overcharged me by £2 for my purchases! Do be warned that although there is ample town centre parking, they should rename this place ...
