..., you would probably be better off looking elsewhere in the country (and beleive me, there is a LOT to see). However, Colombo has got some very good examples of colonial architecture, mostly dating from the British period. The museum is also worth a visit, as is the Gangaramaya temple, built in the middle of a lake.
Driving in Colombo is not recommended for the novice, as it really is quite chaotic. A particular problem are the three-wheeler (auto/tuk-tuk) taxis. These are very handy for getting around the city, and if you're prepared to bargain with the driver, reasonably economical as well (note that these taxis do NOT have meters - it is advisable to agree on a fare with the driver before you get in). However, be prepared for the inevitable adrenaline rush, as your taxi weaves through the chaotic traffic of Colombo. Amazingly, more often...

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, varied itineraries, cheap, friendly people Disadvantages: takes a long time to get anywhere (Colombo- Kandy 3hours)
...are probably the best. Hikkaduwa is too commercialised and the same goes for Negombo, plus the beach is narrow and dirty. Colombo is dirty, hectic, noisy and a tad dangerous because of the indiscriminate bomb blasts although the nationalmuseum is well worth visiting. A special mention should go to Haputale with its breathtaking views of a large part of Sri Lanka and a journey on the Podi Menike Hill country train is a must. The journey from kandy to Badulla takes about 10 hours but is well worth it because of the spectacular scenery of the Hill Country.
Avoid the big hotels on the coast and do stay at family run guesthouses. They are good value, you get a better feel of the country and a taste of proper Sri Lankan food ( which is just as hot as Indian with more emphasis on the staple foods; rice, potatoes and coconuts).

Advantages: Free Transfer from Colombo Intl. Airport to Lanka Oberoi Hotel Disadvantages: hmmm, have to think about that one.
...I have recently booked a ticket through Apple Air LTD. (www.applegrp.com) Their office is located in a small building in Hammersmith and I was served by some very friendly faces. I think they deal mostly in flights to Sri Lanka but I think they have services worldwide. I haven't had any trouble with them, and I have been booking with them for a long time. They deal in flights to destinations worldwide, crusises etc. all the works and also, they offer Wedding Organising aboard. They also offer FREE transfer from the Colombo International Airport to the Lanka Oberoi Hotel, Colombo as they have a cab service in London and Colombo (applecars). It helps a lot, especially if you travel to Sri Lanka a lot. Everything is turning Apples with them. lol, + it does great fares to Colombo via Doha, Qatar, and they put you up in a hotel and you can do...
