Colonia de Sacramento, uruguayan getaway.

Advantages: Relaxed atmosphere
Disadvantages: Not much to do, picture postcard town

Colonia (Colonia de Sacramento) is a small colonial style town situated at the mouth of the River Plata in southern Uruguay. It was an important town as it was on the border between the Portuguese colony in the north that would become Brazil and the Spanish colony of the vice-royalty of the River Plata which would become Argentina. The strategic location on the river, which was important for transport and trade, means it was much fought over and changed between the two colonies many times. Nowadays, the town is quite small and its importance is linked to the fact that it is a huge tourist town with visitors coming from Uruguay, Argentina and across the world to see a sleepy, well-preserved colonial town. Colonia is on the UNESCO World heritage list. Most people visit Colonia as part of a day trip from Buenos Aires (BA) in Argentina ...

Colonia del Sacramento

Advantages: Lots of History
Disadvantages: Not for non history lovers

If you visit Argentina, I think that it worth crossing the Rio de la Plata (River Plate) to visit Uruguay. And colonia is a good option. It takes an hour or two, depending on the ferry you choose to cross the river. Buquebus is the name of the company that organizes this travels that can also include a lunch in a farm, or in a restaurant inside the old city, or even a night in a hotel. The price for a whole day including the meal and the tour is about 40 pounds, depending on the menu for the lunch (the farm option is more expensive). Colonia used to be the old capital of the country. The complete name is colonia Del Sacramento, a catholic name for one of the eldest spanish/portuguese colony in South America. How old are we talking about? The portuguese Manoel Lobo founded it in 1680 and then although Portugal and Spain agreed ...

Review of Colonia del Sacramento

The "Germany" of South America

Advantages: Coolness and quietness. European culture and beauty in a tropical setting.
Disadvantages: Distance... Roads are not very good

AS someone who has visited LA COLONIA TOVAR many times I would cerrtanily recommend the trip - especially if you go via LA VICTORIA. It is not a road for the faint-hearted driver as hairpin bends, precipice's and mad drivers are quite a combination! On the way to Colonia Tovar (or La Colonia as it is called locally) there are a lot of places to stop and some fine scenery to behold. Watch paragliders soarig through the azure sky and wish you could do it to... As you go further up the road you will begin to appreciate three things not known in most parts of Venezuela - silence - coolness - and cleanliness - It is a real change. They're still a lot of German style houses and good german sausages. I have been told that the beer is good but since I dont drink I cant give a personal opinion on that one! After you meal I recoommend that ...
