AS someone who has visited LA COLONIA TOVAR many times I would cerrtanily recommend the trip - especially if you go via LA VICTORIA. It is not a road for the faint-hearted driver as hairpin bends, precipice's and mad drivers are quite a combination!

On the way to Colonia Tovar (or La Colonia as it is called locally) there are a lot of places to stop and some fine scenery to behold. Watch paragliders soarig through the azure sky and wish you could do it to... As you go further up the road you will begin to appreciate three things not known in most parts of Venezuela - silence - coolness - and cleanliness - It is a real change.

They're still a lot of German style houses and good german sausages. I have been told that the beer is good but since I dont drink I cant give a personal opinion on that one! After you meal I recoommend that you go on a trip through the hills where you will be able to identify landmarks that are miles away. If you prefer more sedate atractions you can browse through many shops in the town and pick up the gifts that you want to take home with you. Prices are reasonable and shopkeepers friendly...

If you prefer the heat, then continue down the road (if you dare) to the secluded beaches of Puerto Maya and Puerto Cruz. If you go at low season you will have the beach to yourself, but I do not recommend that you go at Carnival or Easter as the palce is packed. These beaches are really nice and the towns are old-style Venezuelan fishing villages.

So... are you still sitting there... I thought that you would already be on the way...

Excellent ! I agree with you in taking La Victoria Road to Colonia Tovar. It is amazing, fantastic. I'm Venezuelan, but i have to say that this road is the most incredible drive I've ever made ! I invite everybody to visit Colonia Tovar and sorroundings.
