Everyone has seen a film entitled 'Gladiator'. It captured the world's imagination with graphic depictions of ancient Rome. Viewers marvelled at the traditions, were shocked at the gore and blood, and symphasised with those that dies in the name of sport.
What most viewers forget, however, is that this is absolutely real. People did die in front of huge, leering crowds and people paid money to watch this. If you visit the Colloseum in Rome, all this comes alive.
In front of you is the remains of the huge structure depicted in the film. It is crumbling and has lost much of its original splendour, but it is still there in grand stature. You can climb up to the rows of seating and look down onto the stage that must have held so many gruesome deaths. Revealed are the under-ground cellars that held the gladiators and those that held wild and dangerous animals such as wild cats. It is truelly magical to be up there and look down from the seating that those same leering Romans sat in. It was here that it all happened.
The Colloseum is easily visited. It is situated on the main metro system and its exit is literally at the foot of the Colloseum itself. It is not expensive to go into it, and is definetly worth the small expense.
