Colosseum is the first place we visited in Rome. We had been on a trip to Italy in the month of June 2007. And Rome was on the top of our Itinerary. To be frank. Words are not enough to explain how it feels to be in Rome. Such a historical place. I envy at Romans.
Coming to Colosseum so called Colosseo in Italian language a giant amphitheatre. It was used for contesting gladiators and sometimes between contesting ferocious animals themselves. The entire amphitheatre could accomodate upto 50,000 people.
In order to save time we reserved tickets online. It was a good thing we did... otherwise we have to stand in queue for long time. Check-out the season of your visit. If during April-June tourist would be more. There were people standing outside the colloseum offering guided tours.
There were basically two queues 1.For Group 2.Individuals. If you have online reservation you can directly by-pass both the queues and go to the Counter to get the actual ticket. Yes ! This is what we did.
They have audio guides in various languages. Costs around 6.50 Euros. It really helps. Without a guide you wouldnt; be able to find what it is inside the collosseum. You should return the Audio guide within 3hrs time. They also provide Manual Guided tour which works out cheaper to Audio guide. But the problem with it is the time and the duration. We cannot take our own time with it. Hence we went for Audio guide. There is no perfect markings inside the Colloseum , we have to guess and play the audio guide. You will be given a map (kind of) matching that with the actual picture we have to play the audio. It doesn't say this is No.1 and Play No.1 in audio...
It takes solid 2 -3 hours to get around the Colloseum. It starts with huge pillars and climbing steps to first floor. Once you get into first floor you will get the view of Arena - where the contests used to take place.
Just below the arena you can find the ruined shopping place(used to be) and rooms to hold the equipments.
It is really breathtaking. You should visit it to experience it.
Outside the collosseum there are lot of people dressed up as gladiators (very nice to see) and lot of small shops (to buy soveneirs)
You will get the beautiful view of Arch of Constantine and Palentine Hill from Collosseum.
Dont miss to see Palentine Hill after visiting Collosseum. The ticket includes entry to Palentine Hill as well.
How to get to Colloseum: Rome is well connected (rather Italy) and you can get to any historic place by Metro or by Bus.
Metro Line B : Stop Colosseo. Get out of the station you will be stunned by the view - Collosseum.
Do spend time sitting outside the Collosseum. It is so pleasant you will wish to stay there...
Be aware that people in Rome (Italy) speak only their native language, hence take all the necessary things with you so that you will least take their help.
Hope this helps.
