It alarmed me that some counsellors did not discuss their reservations with the staff as they should not have been lifting or restraining if they felt the slightest bit of doubt. Some counsellors were also training to be health professionals and whilst they admitted that the manual handling was incorrect they agreed to handle incorrectly through fear of not wanting to cause any problems. This reconfirmed to me that a lot of the counsellors were poorly trained and were prepared to jeopardise their careers as well as their health and safety. Upon reflection the staff at camp seemed quite inapproachable and as they had been incorrectly handling for years it seemed they had convinced themselves that what they were doing was right and safe, as no one had ever questioned them before. ..., but at the time put it down to nerves and the unknown, but it was exactly like that when I got out there, especially between the counsellors, and that atmosphere was not something I was comfortable with. I don't know how practical it would be, but maybe if applicants could have a say about the type of camp they are placed at that would have helped.
In terms of Camp America, they are very helpful and professional throughout the whole process, but you do pay for that. I think I paid a lot more than friends doing the scheme through BUNAC and CCUSA, and getting less pocket money at the end, but you end up in the same places in the end. The guy from Manchester I met out there and came back with was getting nearly $800 at the end through BUNAC, and was doing the same job as me. This didn't seem fair.

Advantages: Fantastic way to for everyone to learn more about our wartime history. Disadvantages: None
...until 5pm and has extremely reasonable rates to enter. Adults pay £4, children, OAP's and disabled pay £3. There are special rates for group bookings and the Eden Camp allow school parties which many schools take advantage of.
THE HISTORY OF EDEN CAMP
Eden Camp was built in 1942 as a Prisoner of War Camp during World War II, It housed mainly Italian POW who helped built the huts that the later German POW were to be housed in, from 1944-48 German POW were held in the camp.
The prisoners, a lot of whom were captured in North Africa sat out the war in relative comfort, they generally had a cordial relationship with the guards and were even allowed out to work on nearby local farms to aid the British war effort.
Around 45 huts were built and each housed 64 prisoners, around 1000 men were housed at any one time in the camp. After the war...
