Where is Strasbourg?
Strasbourg is in the North East region of France in Alsace which is on the border with Germany. It has a chequered history in that it has been at different times throughout history either in Germany or in France. It is currently of course in France. The region has its own dialect of French known as Alsacien with a combination of French and German words.

..., I was put into a more spacious room which had a 4th bed (a single). I don't think much of the interior design (I wouldn't have put white, blue, purple and orange together) but the room was clean and comfortable which is what matters. It was also air conditioned (thankfully since it was summer) and had a nice little bathroom.

...When a colleague asked me if I´d accompany her and a form of 31 15/16-year-old pupils on a 2½ day excursion to Strasbourg I agreed, I knew most of the boys and girls and expected they wouldn´t be too stressful and I´d been to Strasbourg so many years ago that I felt my memory could do with some brushing up.
Strasbourg is only 2½ hours by direct train from the town where we live, we got on the train in Germany and got off in France, just like that, no customs people, no border police with dogs checking the train, no changing of money. This is what a united Europe means for us! To imagine that not too long ago young people were taught to see the French as archenemies; if we mentioned that today, they´d look at us as if we were talking about the Middle Ages, yes, we have made progress.
The first impression was so-so, we came out...
