Having spent three nights at the Newcastle under Lyme Comfort Inn I thought that I would give a quick review.
My wonderfull husband decided to add a couple of extra days to the holiday we had already booked, to have a few days away with our youngest two children before collecting the other two in Hastings. He is always rumaging through the papers for 'deals' and found one for the Choice Hotel group of which Comfort, Quality, Sleep Inn (new to UK) and Clarion all belong. We managed to get 3 nights at £50 a night dinner bed and breakfast for the four of us (2 kids were free sharing the room although you were supposed to pay for meals). After struggling to find one in the area we wanted to go to as they were booked very quickly at this price we found newcastle under Lyme.
The girls on the phone were very helpful (except forgetting to send to a brochure as promised), and quick to answer. However, the staff at the hotel surpassed expectations.
The Assistant Manager Anne who had won an award for her position was outstanding and my can she run!
The hotel itself is due for upgrading, but I believe this has been postponed due to the number of guests booking in. It is kept clean and tidy, but is unfortunatley a bit shabby to look at.
The room we booked was onsuite with a double and bunk beds. The furniture was very basic, but there was plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits to compensate. The room also had internet access if required, movies on pay per view, and you could also get in touch with reception on the tv.
Alarms Alarms. I do know from our three nights that the fire alarm system works brilliantly. Had managed to get the wee ones to sleep. Old man had dropped off (No he doesn't drive so he couldn't use that excuse for being tired)and I'm asleep, when at 11.40pm the fire alarm goes. I had said that Anne could run earlier - the silencer wasn't working and we had reached the escape but being so sleepy couldn't open the door - had to break the glass bit first - well she was there before we knew what was going on getting the door open, then gone to the people upstairs. Thankfully a false alarm due to someone flooding his room out purposfully to cause damage. Imagine my surprise on arriving back the following afternoon to see the fire brigade - inspection time. Then at 6.30am on our last morning it went off again, someone decided to turn their room into a sauna by not shutting the bathroom door when showering, as advised. Anne was on again, bolting through the corridors.
The restaurant was excellant. The food although relatively basic was always well presented. There was childrens meals available as well, these were large. Breakfast was eat as much as you want with cereal, toast, full english, croissants etc etc. The staff again were excellent, but I must give another Anne major credit, she was brilliant with the kids, and very accommodating.
I would visit again. Close enough to the Peak District, Alton Towers (you can get discounted tickets at the hotel), Chester, Matlock for Gullivers Kingdom which is great for 2 to 12 year olds, and Abraham Heights.
