It?s absolutely amazing to think that these people moved all these stones rocks and boulders to make this great wall on the top of the mountains. Many parts of the wall are unsafe and in a state of disrepair due to wear and tear caused by weather and also local people stealing the stones to build their own houses. The part of the wall we visited is one of the most visited parts of the Great Wall at Badaling which is only about 45 miles from Beijing. Here the wall has been repaired and you are able to walk up either side. There is a small charge of about 45 Yuan which is just under a pound. Great Wall of China, enduring monument

Advantages: Ancient, magnificent, indeed a Great Wall of China
Disadvantages: Sometimes ghastly winds to cut through you and knock you off your feet

, was swaying in the bitterly cold wind coming straight in from Mongolia. It truly was. Anyway the conditions didn't deter me - before I knew it I was up to a height I never thought I would be fit enough to achieve. Looking out over the hills it was awe-inspriing to think about those who constructed this Great Wall. Now a World Heritage site, since 1987, it is visited by thousands and thousands of people every year but way back in its beginnings it was built to keep people out of China, not to bring them in. A massive fortification wall it has seen many deaths in the harsh conditions to build it, in fact I believe some of those who died in construction are actually buried in the wall. It's around 10 metres high and 5 metres wide and actually has been built through several dynasties which explains the different materials used ...

A Wall of a Time

Advantages: Breathtaking scenery, great hiking experience, unforgettable!
Disadvantages: Your legs will hurt

-ending ribbon of the Wall outlining the country. The sea of green forests and fields, occasionally giving way to a sky blue river or lake. And the air! The air is something that you really appreciate there, especially after coming from polluted Beijing. It takes a while for this experience to sink in. There are so many things playing on your feelings, emotions and mood. But suddenly it all comes together and you feel the pride of the Chinese nation. And it is an overwhelming feeling. You can understand why for so long, they felt they were at centre of the world. Protecting, protected, safe! As behind this wall, there sleeps a mighty dragon. I felt like a little hobbit from the Shire. I bow to the Great Wall and I praise Leo for not letting us down. This was by far the best adventure I have ever had. Maybe I am a dreamer.
