...I appreciate others may have had a great time at this hotel but my personal experience was very poor.
We visited the restaurant at the Hotel Metropole and were served a square slab of pizza as if it had come from a budget frozen food store. The pizza was cold with some tinned mushrooms, ham & tomato thrown on top. When we complained about this the staff were unwilling to help. Eventually they reheated the pizza to within an inch of its life. When we refused to pay for this poor quality food, the best they could offer was a threat to call the police and abuse of my wife and I.
My advice - Avoid this hotel at all costs. There are far better places on LakeComo with "Real" Italian food, served by staff who appreciate their customers....

Advantages: nice scenery & architecture, fine cuisine, great shops, very relaxing place Disadvantages: nothing REALLY spectacular in a country full of attractions

1) Como is ideal for a day trip or weekend getaway from Milan, if you want to escape hectic...

Advantages: very cute city on the lake Disadvantages: lot's of traffic
...Como is a beautiful city on the lake. You can easy reach Como from Milan by train in less then an hour or, if you are coming from North Europe, Como is the first city across the border with Switzerland.
Como downtown is very cute and full of historical monuments.
Only a couple of minutes by walk from Piazza Cavour, the main square of the city, near the lake, you can arrive in Piazza del Duomo where you can visit the Cathedral.
An other very good and very ancient square is Piazza San Fedele, with the San Fedele Church. It's only 10 minutes by walk from the Cathedral.
Como is also known as "silk city" because there are a lot of silk factory. If you want buy silk and save money, you can go to some Silk Outlet around the city.
If you like to walk, you can easily visit Como by walk. If the weather is good, you can go to Brunate...
