Como (Italy)

... ***** Piacere (Pleasure to meet you) Como, Italy! ****** Right before you arrive in the city of Como, you are greeted by the "not so nice" border patrol. Or least, they were "not so nice" to my friends and I. In a way, I guess I can't blame them much. There were four people in our ... Read review

A Lake of Shining Waters Surrounded by Mountains & George Clooney

Advantages: The Cities of Como and Bellagio around the Lake, close to Switzerland/Milan, Can tour Lake by Boat
Disadvantages: You won't be able to stay forever (unless your Rich and George Clooney).

...of Como. At first glance, Como wasn't that impressive. Sure it was quaint and slightly "Italian" looking, but I figured it was like any border town, mostly not impressive.

As we drive around into the city more, you start to notice small details that make the place appear beautiful. Little squares and plaza's that pop up in the middle of nowhere, gorgeous Cathedrals, buildings of varying styles and centuries pushed up against ...
...I loved Venice. Rome was....historically moving (even though i'm REALLY NOT a Catholic), Tuscany was dream-like....

So why is Lake Como my favourite place in Italy? Well, you'll just have to see for yourself.

The Gate to Italy

Advantages: nice scenery & architecture, fine cuisine, great shops, very relaxing place
Disadvantages: nothing REALLY spectacular in a country full of attractions

...south of the Swiss border, Como is the first town in Italy. Very different in style and culture to Italy's thriving cities, Mediterranean holiday resorts and antique sights, Como exudes the mild charm of Lombardy region. I was a bit surprised myself when I realised that I hadn't written anything yet on Ciao about one of my favourite countries, Italy. So when famous Ciaoer Connaisseur_Haggler said she was going to nearby Milano two weeks ago, I decided ...
...and its pearl, Como. Como is two things in one - the city of Como, and the Lago di Como (lake). It is not really a holiday destination for itself, but a place which you shouldn't miss when you are nearby. 1) Como is ideal for a day trip or weekend getaway from Milan, if you want to escape hectic life and tourist crowds in the city on a holiday or business trip. From Milano, Como is less than half an hour away by car or train. 2) When travelling ...

Ferried Around a Lakeside Paradise

Advantages: Spectacular scenery, Italian food, great ferries, not overrun by tourists
Disadvantages: Attractions close smack in the middle of the day, credit cards rarely accepted

Visiting Lake Como in the first week of June 2005 it was refreshing to find such a beautiful place not overrun with tourists. We stayed in a villa rental, Casa Pree, located in Rezzonico, a small town about 2 miles north of Menaggio on the western side of the lake. I'll review Casa Pree, the villa where we stayed, at the end of this article, first though here's a rundown of taking a vacation on Lake Como. Getting around the lake you have two choices: ...
...we took around western lake Como were wide enough in places for only a truck and a car to pass within a few inches. Once accustomed to the narrow roads this doesn't present too much of an issue. In general Italian roads are very good and the autostradas (motorways/freeways) excellent. Of course Italians can perform fairly death defying overtaking maneuvers on these narrow windy roads precipitated by motor-scooters, trucks and cautious tourists with ...

ONCE UPON A TIME

Advantages: Many
Disadvantages: None I can think of

...husband and I, stopped in Como for two nights to break the long drive from London; we were going all the way down to Rome. In Switzerland, the motorway runs alongside lovely big lakes, the scenery was certainly more than beautiful but soon after crossing the border into Italy, suddenly we were on a high ground and started to descend towards Como. From that hight the lake is like a very wide river with deep meanders that appears and disappears behind ...
...went around the town, Como is not very big but plenty of interesting places to see and lovely little shops with gorgeous locally handmade goods (leather handbags and wooden ornament made from olive trees ) Como is connected to the villages on the other side of the lake by very frequent ferries and, as a walking passenger or with a car, very inexpensive (only few Euro for a return ticket) Restaurants are a bit expensive, specially those near the ...

The world's capital of silk

Advantages: the Lake Como is one of the most beautiful places in Italy and Como is a very good place to buy silk products
Disadvantages:

Como is a beautiful town, of approximately 80.000 inhabitants, located on border of the Lario, the ancient name of the Lake Como. Lake Como, one of the most romantic places in Italy, is the third largest lake in Italy, after Garda Lake and Lake Maggiore. Lake Como is located 25 miles north of Milan. Como and Milan are connected by bus and train. The city of Como is a center of artistic and cultural importance, combined with important industrial ...

A beautiful city on the lake

Advantages: very cute city on the lake
Disadvantages: lot's of traffic

Como is a beautiful city on the lake. You can easy reach Como from Milan by train in less then an hour or, if you are coming from North Europe, Como is the first city across the border with Switzerland. Como downtown is very cute and full of historical monuments. Only a couple of minutes by walk from Piazza Cavour, the main square of the city, near the lake, you can arrive in Piazza del Duomo where you can visit the Cathedral. An other very good ...
...by walk from the Cathedral. Como is also known as "silk city" because there are a lot of silk factory. If you want buy silk and save money, you can go to some Silk Outlet around the city. If you like to walk, you can easily visit Como by walk. If the weather is good, you can go to Brunate by the cable car and you'll see a wonderful panorama of the city! A perfect guesthouse.

Advantages: beautiful house and city.
Disadvantages: none.

so much to see and so much shopping to be done that you could spend a few days there! Going back to Bergamo after a day in Milan however feels like such a retreat as it is away from the city. There is something for everyone to see, not just shops, no matter what your interest is! Bergamo is a great place to stay to use as a base for travelling around Lombardy. It is only a short distance to Lake Como which is the second largest lake in Italy. It is an absolutely stunning must see destination if you are in the area. It is home to such stars as George Clooney and Donatella Versace. Lake Garda is also only about an hour and a half away after two train journeys. Brescia is a wonderful city with quaint shops and a real authentic Italian feel and is only about 45 minutes away from Bergamo on a direct train. From Brescia you can travel to ...

Do not say Milculo never ever

Advantages: In the North of Italy
Disadvantages: Too big

Milculo is a swear word! I was born near Milan and studied there at the University, although I was commuting back home. Milan is the most dynamic amongst the major cities in Italy, in terms of jobs market. From a tourist point of view, Milan makes a shopping destination for many Britons. I can say this since I have always found many Britons full of shopping on my flights back from Milan. Milan also makes a base for exploring the region of Lombardy. Mountains are never too far away, you may have to drive 3 hours if you want to ski, but if you fancy some fresh air and beautiful sceneries, you may go to the area of Varese or Como. Lakes are also one of the attractions of this area, and, finally, like anywhere else in Italy, good food can always be found! ...

Ciao bella

Advantages: Lots to do, beautiful scenery, nice people
Disadvantages: Cost to get there

it is within an hour of when you first get it stamped). Out with Milan there are a lot of things to see. About an hours drive northwards is Lake Como, a must for those of you who enjoy beautiful scenery. Despite the rumours Italy is a very easy place to drive as long as you keep calm and learn how they use there horn, but if you are a bit cautious the public transport is great. Overall I don’t think you will find a better place to go on Holiday than Milan. ...
