Where in the world this month?

Advantages: Interesting, stunning photos and amazing trips
Disadvantages: Some may find the price too expensive

I have been a subscriber to the Conde Nast magazine now for just over a year and find it to be the best travel magazine out there. There are plenty of reasons for this but first i'll tell you a little about the mag for those who don't know what it is or may have even never heard of it. The History: Conde Nast is a group of publishers that develops a lot of well known magazines including Glamour, GQstyle, and easy living. They also develop a lot of the sites to complement the magazines and to enhance the readers experience. The Conde Nast Traveller magazine was established in 1997 and in the same year the website to it was created under CNTraveller.com. The Editor of the magazine is Sarah Miller and the magazine has over 300,000 readers every month. What is it? Well stupid question you might say - the clue is in the name! But it ...

A hotel fit for a Duque?

Advantages: convenient location, clean quiet and comfortable
Disadvantages: single room a touch on the small side, breakfast quite pricey compared with local cafés.

I stayed in the Gran Hotel Conde Duque for five nights when attending a conference which I had been organising in Madrid last October. As I work for a non-profit organisation my remit was to ensure that my accommodation was not overly expensive - no easy task, as well as being one of the official conference hotels. By booking on Activehotels.com I was able to get a single room for EUR 91 (ca. GBP 63) a night ? coming out at just under EUR 98 (ca GBP 70) a night including the mandatory sales tax. This was substantially cheaper than the ?reduced rate? of EUR 135 (ca. GBP 97) excluding tax being offered for single occupancy of a double room by our conference partners. It should of course be noted that as with nearly all hotels in Madrid, prices are exclusive of breakfast ? for breakfast you will pay approx EUR12 (ca. GBP 8) extra. I did ...

Advertorials and Conde Nast back-scratching ahoy!

Advantages: hanbag-size, good freebies, good beauty writing
Disadvantages: too much promotion and 'bought-in' features from US magazines

. Now I understand that Glamour is a business, and that advertising keeps magazines afloat. And the more features or shoots you have, the more advertising you need to pay for it. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere. The bigwigs at Conde Nast (who also own Vogue) must be sitting in offices somewhere, rubbing their hands together and laughing at us minions for continuing to buy into a magazine that's only got about 20% written editorial / features and then lots of advert-lead fluff. Yes, advertising allows the mag to sell at such a low cover price, but there's only so far you can go. The Glamour / New Look partnership has even spread to the account card statements, and in-store there are 'glamour' labels on certain items of clothing. It's not even funny anymore. The last straw came this month, when I walked into the newsagents to find ...
