We flew Continental between Gatwick-Newark(NY)-Gatwick 2 weeks ago. Our experience can only be described as "Superb". We had a morning "outbound" flight, and an evening "inbound" flight.
The check-in at Gatwick was fast and efficient, with friendly and helpful staff. I think they must be introducing a new "Self-Service" system, as there were plenty of staff around to direct you, and also to do preliminary checks on passports. From initially entering the terminal to checking in our bags took no more than 15 minutes. I was also impressed with the attentive nature of the check-in staff. I have to use a walking stick, and although when we booked the flights, we did not request any assistance, the member of staff who checked us in, asked if we required any assistance or help.
The flight from Gatwick was in a 767 and we had 2 seats in the
middle seating section, which was ideal for us as there was no issue of leaving seats etc, without disturbing another passenger. The boarding again was efficient, calling passengers by rows. The flight was boarded within time, and we departed as scheduled.
The seats in economy are fine, and I found the leg room sufficient (I'm 5'8"). I did see a number of much taller passengers, who did not appear to have any problems either. The only problem I found with the seat, is that it had very little lumber support, so I ended up using a pillow to make it slighly more comfortable. The recline angle was fine, but again, had to adjust my "pillow" support to make it comfortable. The blanket and pillow supplied were of a good standard, and had no problem asking for another pillow to replace my "lumber" one.
The in-flight entertainment was good, with a selection of TV, Radio and games! - OK the games were pretty basic, but the odd hand of poker killed a few minutes every now and then! The headset provided, was basic, but surprsingly comfortable (I have had sets in the past, that within 20 minutes of wearing them, they were uncomfortable and annoying). The seat back screens were tilt adjustable, which was good when the person in front reclined their chair, and the control handset was easy to use.
In-flight service was excellent, with attentive and friendly staff. We were served 3 sets of drinks during the flight, but you could request more if required. All soft drinks, Tea, Coffee were free and spirits etc had to be paid for, which although we didn't have any, were priced at $6 or £3. The food, was adequate - It was hot and it did have some taste to it, although as we were near the back of plane flying out, they had run out of the "Beef" dinner so we had a choice of Chicken or they did have a few vegetarian dinners over - We had the chicken, which was fine, on the flight back we did get to try the Beef, which I think was better.
Our outbound flight arrived a little ahead of schedule, and on disembarking, and getting through the passport control, found our bags only a few minutes later coming through the carousel!
Our return flight from Newark was very much the same experience, 767 plane etc, but again the check-in staff were excellent. We realised on our inward flight, we had been allocated a side section window/mid seat. We asked if it would be possible to change to a mid-section as it would be easier for me and also for my partner to assist me if needed when I had to use the loo, take a little stretch etc. This was no problem. In fact the we were allocated a whole "3 row" section as the flight was not fully booked.
The only other slight problem, was with the operational side of Newark Airport - Apparently the evening flights get very congested, and the Captain was very apologetic when he announced we were in the "Mid 20's for the take-off Q..." We took around 50 minutes taxiing before we took off, but we made up some of the time in-flight and only arrived around 40 minutes later than scheduled. Again bag collection was fast and easy.
Before booking our flights with Continental, we had carried out some research - Visiting various sites to get an overall picture of all the airlines that flew the route. Of them all we viewed Continental as the best of a "Mediocre" level of service, reliability etc - However, on this experience we would definately use Continental again, and have already recommended them to friends. We also were impressed as the cost of the flights were in the mid-range level which was also a pleasent surprise.
Please Note: I have edited this review, the plane was a 767 NOT a 757.
