Tivoli Gardens - the centre of Copenhagen

Advantages: Red noses, cold hands and wonder galore - a must do Christmas experience
Disadvantages: It gets might darned cold!!!

...city. I had heard of Tivoli but didn't know just what it was. Tivoli is in fact the oldest amusement park of the world . It is said that it was Tivoli that inspired Walt Disney to build Disneyland. The park opened on August 15, 1843 and was designed by Georg Carstensen who said of Tivoli in 1844, "Tivoli will never, so to speak, be finished," and he was right, it has changed and grown over the years. Tivoli is situated in the heart in Copenhagen ...
...people give bad reviews of Tivoli gardens, but I think the reason for this is that they are expecting a 'Disney' type park - that is not what Tivoli is about - it is an amusement park that has timeless charm and class that you can't get anywhere else. Tivoli Gardens truly is a remarkable place. There are beautiful gardens, wonderful restaurants and entertainment. With great rides for both children and adults. I have never been to Tivoli during the ...

Th hippiest place in the world!

Advantages: all the love, hash, solitude and freedom you want
Disadvantages: no accommodation and maybe closing down by government decree

As you arrive at the front gates of Christiania two thoughts cross your mind, the first i hope those dogs don't come after me and the second being, that it simply isn't what you expected. If you take the tour you will first be introduced to the essence of Christiania, the philosophy of freedom in the Christianities eyes. Where they (a man, semi-stoned) gives a lecture on the history of Christiania. Starting with the fact that it was a movement that ...
...a bit too much hash (also known as the love) hundreds of thousands of people marched and the streets of Copenhagen and rallied in the radhuasen pladzen much like Trafalgar Sq in London and the moving on to how they organise things and are happy to answer as many questions as possible. Then you are taken through the streets of the Freetown; firstly Pusher street (seriously!). Where the Christianities have decreed that Jim or Nora or sue can sell hash ...

Christiania - Copenhagen

Advantages: Interesting history
Disadvantages: Struggling to find an identity in the 21st Century

...came to the heart of Christiania, the self consciously named Pusher Street. Not surprisingly this is where you would go for drugs back in the wild days. Those have gone now as part of the truce and have been replaced by a few market stalls selling local art work, t-shirts and the ubiquitous head stall offering bongs and other paraphernalia. Christiania probably comes alive in the evenings as people congregate in the central areas but the overall ...
...after the night before. This was both actual (this was Sunday morning after all) but also more generally. I got the clear sense that Christiania was not entirely comfortable with its new found respectability and acceptance and was struggling to come to terms with the outbreak of peace. You get the feeling that the residents enjoyed the kudos of being outsiders and the whole siege mentality thing. Christiania is now a strange place to visit and it ...

Welcome to Copenhagen!

Advantages: Excellent rail connections, well designed, Huge Duty Free area
Disadvantages: Crowded Check-In, Costly catering

Arriving at Copenhagen airport, one immediately remarks; "What a nice airport!" The glass is spotless, and allows lots of natural light in, and the floors are made from a gorgeous polished wood. Everything is clean, there is a lot of space, and it is so easy and swift to move through the formalities. I arrived at lunchtime, so it was quite busy, and all the facilities were open and staffed, I can not say how it would be if you were to arrive during ...
...fast trains going in to Copenhagen (13 minute jorney, cost DKK25) or across the modern Oresund bridge to Malmo, Sweden (27 minutes, cost DKK50) So, if you are visiting Southern Sweden, it could make sense to fly to CPH instead, and take advantage of the modern train connections. Ticket office staff speak good English, and will even point out cost saving options such as a ticket to cover various zones, or a 24 hour pass. So, from the aircraft disembarkation ...

...ever visited. Anyway, the Round Tower (Rundetaarn) is certainly one of the less well-known monuments in the city - I certainly had no idea about it when I visited Copenhagen a decade ago but a colleague mentioned it to me before my recent return. Whilst exploring the city centre on foot, I noticed it marked on the free map I'd picked up at the hotel and decided to take a look. The tower is easy to find, being very centrally located directly on Křbmagergade, ...
...to reach completion, and the Round Tower is still architecturally unique in Europe. The central core of the tower is hollow, and instead of the space within the tower walls being divided into floors, connected by staircases as one might expect, the whole interior forms a spiral ramp that winds around the central core and measures 209 metres in length. According to various accounts, the king was fond of driving up the ramp with his horse-drawn carriage ...
