Getting There: -------------------- The Copthorne Tara Hotel is conveniently situated a short walk (about 5 minutes) from the Kensington High Street Tube station. This means that getting to and from the hotel is quick and convenient. The Kensington High Street Tube Station is part of both the District and Circle Lines, meaning that you can get to many major and convenient locations by jumping on the tube there (including Kings Cross and Victoria stations). Although this was probably bad luck, I do urge you to check that while staying at the Copthorne Tara, the district and circle lines are running as unfortunately during my stay they were under maintenance for 2 of the days. In this case the nearest station was Notting Hill, which was around a 30 minute walk away (not good when wearing high heals to go to the theatre). In terms of proximity to the west end theatres, the CopthorneTara is about a 30 minute (around £15) taxi drive. When getting the tube it took us about 20 minutes.
What's at Kensington ----------------------------- In my opinion Kensington is a lovely area with plenty to do, there's a variety of shops and restaurants. If you walk towards Notting Hill there's some lovely looking antique shops and bars. While on our visit we visited Kensington Palace, we had a look around the Diana exhibition, which I found very moving, and we also had a look on other floors which look at the history of Kensington Palace and some of the other royals that lived there. I particularly liked the room where Princess Victoria woke up to find that she was the queen. There were plenty of historic artefacts and focal points to suit all different interests and tastes; uniforms, dresses, art, architecture, photography, as well as people. Entry was around £10 each, but I felt well worth it, as you received an audio guide that was very informative to carry with you on your walk. I also believe tours went on during the day at certain times. Other places of interest around the area are: - The Natural History Museum - The Science Museum - Earls Court Exhibition Centre - Olympia Exhibition Centre - Portobello Road Market and Notting Hill - The Royal Albert Hall
What's at the Copthorne Tara? ------------------------------------------ The Copthorne Tara has 3 kinds of rooms, normal, club room and junior suite. During my stay I was lucky to be in a club room, which costs around £40 per night to upgrade to, but gives you the added benefit of: -free use of the gym -free tea and coffee in the club lounge (note* although this sounds very classy, it is not served to you, you get it from a coffee machine) -free drinks between 6.45 and 8.15 -Free Broadband Internet Access (both in the room, and computers
are available to use free of charge in the club lounge) - Complimentary Continental Breakfast (usually about 12.00)
In addition all rooms include:
A refrigerator* - No not a mini bar, just a refrigerator, inside are bottles of complimentary water. Then the rest of the space is for you to use however you like. We used it to put our sandwiches in.
Tea and Coffee Making Facilities* - With tea, coffee, sugar, Candrel (sweetener), hot chocolate, kettle, a filter coffee, some biscuits. Although we did start with this things weren't always replaced, and after the first day we didn't get any more biscuits.
Telephone* - Good for calling room service to bring up a lovely pizza!
Satellite TV and pay movies* (6 out of 12 of which were porn...make your own mind up but it didn't impress me). The furniture in our room included; a mirrored wardrobe, 2 beds of decent size, a desk/dressing table with mirror, a cabinet with 3 draws and a cupboard as well as a cupboard containing tea and coffee making facilities. A trouser press, a large arm chair and a beside table. The number of light switches was impressive, with each individual lamp/light having it's own switch in various parts of the room. However, I found the 'master switch' useful, which just turned what lights were on - off.
In addition to these rooms, the Copthorne Tara has: A business centre A Secretarial Service Meeting Rooms A Car Park (Charged at £20 for 24 hours) A baby sitting service is available on request if you have children As well as high chairs and a children's menu Concierge 24 hour Security Same-day laundry and dry cleaning Car rental Tour desk Fitness room (with crosstrainers, treadmills and room for warm/down and stretching). Theatre reservations can be made at an entertainment desk Bureau de Change A small shop selling souvenirs and a limited amount of food and drink The staff speak many different languages
Eating and drinking facilities: *Bugis Street Brasserie* - A restaurant in the hotel that serves Singaporean, Chinese and Malaysian food. Although we did not try going to this restaurant, it seemed that it was a popular choice and the food looked lovely.
*Cafe Express* - is both a cyber cafe, offering 24 hour internet access, as well as a conventional cafe offering hot and cold snacks and drinks.
*Copthorne Club Lounge* - exclusively for Club Lounge customers. Coffee and tea is available from a machine all day. While free drinks (beer, wine and coke) are available from 6.45 - 8.15. The club lunge also serves breakfast between 8 and 10. I did see a clever trick, some people ordered their food into the club lounge and had their free drinks with their meal between 6.45 and 8.15.
*The Brasserie Restaurant and Bar* - While you may be asking yourselves, with all these good features why is she giving the Copthorne Tara 3*? The truth begins here... After a rush to get to the hotel, then to our show and then back to the hotel for some food at around 8.30 on Friday night, the Brasserie was a tempting place to get a bite to eat. Firstly, it was reasonably priced offering a small number of options but all for a decent price. On going to the bar and ordering 2 drinks and 2 meals on to our room bill, I found the bar tender slightly standoffish. I was annoyed to find out from another bar tender after drinking my 'diet coke' that it was actually a normal coke. As when asked to bring me another diet coke he answered' diet this time?'. Then to make it worse after waiting patiently for an hour for our food, I was getting annoyed as it was now 10 o'clock and the people around us who had come in up to 30 minutes after us had started receiving their food. On top of this, when asked where our food was the waiter said he would go and find out. Shortly after we watched him having a heated conversation with the person who took our order and then run across to the kitchen with a piece of paper. 30 minutes later (a total of 1 hour and 30 minutes after our order had been taken) we received our food without apology or explanation. I won't say the food was bad, however after waiting 1hr30 we were in need of another drink, when approaching the bar the waiter who we had asked about our food approached me and said 'don't worry I will get it for you and bring it over'. Presuming this meant that we didn't need to pay as it was their fault we now had to buy more drinks, we left the bar after having our meal and to our embarrassment he chased us out of the bar telling us that we hadn't paid for our drinks. Even though the rest of our order had gone onto our room bill.
In conclusion to this section, although the hotel in general is nice and the rooms are spacious and homely, I cannot recommend eating in the bar, as I found the service badly organized and rude.
The room from a customers point of view -------------------------------------------------------- Ok, I can make my peace with the excessive amount of porn available on the pay per view. And to be honest apart from that the room was nice. We stayed in a twin, on the 11th floor (note* from what I could see club rooms are only on the 11th and 12th floors). There were 4 lifts available so getting up and downstairs in the hotel was not difficult, and though I am not the biggest fan of lifts, they were roomy and nice inside. My one issue was with the door between our room and the room next door. Firstly, I'd like to say we stayed from Friday to Monday and on Friday night and Saturday night there was no one in the room next door, however on Sunday night people moved into the room next door and we could hear their every word, it didn't help that they were shouting to each other late at night. Nor that they appeared to be banging things against the door, however I must mention that the noise was quite bad. The bathroom was clean and the towels were big and felt like decent quality. The chain on the toilet was a bit dodgy and took ages to flush, but in all the room was good.
Service ----------- I have already expressed my annoyance at the bar staff and therefore I will not go down that path again but discuss the other staff in the hotel.
*Front Desk* When checking in and out we found the front desk staff helpful and friendly. They were quick, which was good as we were in such a rush to get to the theatre when checking in, but gave us all of the help that we needed to find our room and the other facilities. In all I would say that if all of the staff were as friendly and helpful as these the hotel would be a much better place. On one occasion our key broke and we couldn't get into our room, the front desk staff were extremely helpful and quickly resolved the problem for us with little fuss or difficulty.
*Cleaners* While it is difficult to comprehend how difficult it must be to be a hotel cleaner, I did find the cleaning service a little annoying during our stay. Firstly, possibly our own fault, we were awoken at 9 oclock in the morning by the cleaner coming in (we didn't have our do not disturb sign on the door, which we put up when we got out of bed). However, cleaning was supposed to progress at 9.00 therefore being in the middle of the corridor on the 11th floor we did not expect to be fighting the cleaners off at the stroke of 9. Additionally, as mentioned previously, not everything was replaced. For example, we began with 2 bottles of water, one mineral and one fizzy, when we drank these they were replaced by only 1 bottle of water. The biscuits were the same, on the first day we had 2, on the second day they weren't replaced, nor on the third. Although I can make my peace with everything not being replaced one situation occurred with the cleaners that I feel was not right. We had gone downstairs to attempt to get our key replaced, on returning to our room we were told by a cleaner that we couldn't come in, not even to get our stuff and that we would have to return in 10 minutes. Although we weren't in a particular rush that day, and we didn't push to go in and get our stuff, we were put in a situation where we felt we couldn't really push and say we wanted to get in as (perhaps because the cleaner did not speak English well) we were basically told to go away.
Despite this, I must say another cleaner was particularly helpful when we forgot where our room was and helped us to find it by asking us what type etc. I think again it is perhaps a lack of staff training that is the issue, as I can imagine cleaners aren't encouraged to tell customers to go away.
*Club Lounge Staff* Although during the day the club lounge was quiet, with little or not staff present, on a morning around 3 staff managed the tables during breakfast, ensuring that everyone had coffee or juice. They were kind, friendly and polite and we had no problems at all with them. In fact they made the stay more comfortable.
The story was slightly different at free drinks time. 1 member of staff managed a small fridge, where there were bottles of drink stored. When we went down it was relatively quiet, around 4 tables were full. You are not allowed to help yourself to drinks but must wait until you are offered one, or if you have the guts, go and ask for one. This single member of staff frequently disappeared for minutes at a time, leaving customers waiting for drinks. On one occasion, some men asked for a drink he had run out of, despite being very close to the bar he would not provide more of that kind of drink and they were forced to choose a different kind. Despite this I managed to get 4 diet cokes during the 90 minutes.
*Room Service* On one occasion we ordered room service. When calling for room service I was greeted, again by someone who's English was not excellent, I asked for a pizza with chicken and a pint of lager. Although she understood basically what I wanted, she couldn't understand that I wanted chicken on the pizza, not just a chicken or a portion of chicken. However, she was kind and willing to listen carefully to understand and our order was right when it came. The man who brought us the food was very friendly and helpful, bringing the food over to the desk and uncovering it for us.
*Other Service* Again, we had slight trouble here. When booking the room we made two separate bookings. Firstly my mum used priceline to get 2 nights in a normal room and then won the 3rd night in an auction on ebay. However the 3rd night was for a clubroom, so she rang and explained the situation, asking if we could be given the same room for all 3 nights so that we didn't have to move, and that she would pay the extra for a club room. On Sunday we noticed the phone flashing red, but having pressed the red flashing button we heard nothing so left it. On Monday when we about to leave the hotel, my mum came across a set of instructions on how to use the phone, turned out we had a message. On listening to it she heard that our room had been double booked, new customers were arriving and we were asked to go down to the reception so that we could be moved. Unfortunately we had missed this message, however we were furious to find that we were going to be turfed out of our room in order to give it to someone else when we had paid £80 extra so that we didn't have to move room. It can't have been that important anyway as no one came up to our room to ask us to move and we stayed there for the final night.
When the fire alarm went off at 2.00 in the morning on Monday, it was almost insulting that we weren't told what was happening. It was not a fire drill, therefore there was cause for alarm. We walked down 11 flights of stairs and into the car park. To meet around 40 other confused guests. I was disgusted to see other guests hanging from their bedroom windows clearly deciding whether it was worth coming down, staff weren't ensuring that guests were getting out quickly. To a large extent it was every man for himself. Finally after about 20 minutes, a man who was difficult to understand (whether that was due to the echo on the megaphone or his accent or both, I am unsure) stood on the wall with a megaphone and said something that not many people seemed to understand and then walked back into the hotel. I presume it was that we could go back inside as he didn't question people following him.
Prices --------- Prices depend on when you book, what type of room you want and when you book for. We booked through PriceLine and got 2 nights for £60 each (Friday and Saturday) however we paid an extra £40 to upgrade to a club room. To give you some idea, based on a booking for 2 people for 2 nights, starting on Friday 1st February, the Copthorne quote: Prices range from around £89.00 per night to £137 per night. Here are 2 rooms that I felt might be common choices: £103 per night - Standard Double/2 Singles £137 per night - Club Queen Bed
The Copthorne Tara also have vouchers that are available through Ebay, however, these tend to be on a Sunday night, we picked up a further night in a club room for about £65.00.
In conclusion I won't say that my stay at the Copthorne Tara Hotel was unpleasant, in all I enjoyed the location and despite the tube being shut I liked the area and the atmosphere. However, I would say that in future, due to my own experience, I would look to one of the other near by hotels for a place to stay. I enjoyed having a club room and access to the club lounge was nice. Breakfast was very good and some of the staff were friendly and caring. However, I would certainly say that the hotel should consider better staff training as I felt the way we were treated on more than one occasion was not acceptable.
