CAPITAL CÓRDOBA

Advantages: The Mezquita, the Jewish Quarter, the history
Disadvantages: The heat

Arriving in Córdoba, it's difficult not to be impressed as the Mezquita looms large on the horizon. This magnificent former Mosque is now the city's Cathedral and undoubtedly, its most famous attraction and landmark. This was probably the main reason we were visiting the city, and we had booked accommodation at the Hotel Maimonides, literally feet from the Mezquita.

CÓRDOBA has a long and illustrious history. It was founded ...
...and because of its strategic position - the furthest navigable point of the Guadalquivir River, it developed into an important port. It was the Romans who constructed the massive bridge over the Guadalaquiver River, El Puente Romano. It consists of 16 arches (although none of the arches are Roman - but the bases are) and once formed part of the Via Augusta. It's still open today, although only for pedestrian traffic. Guarding the bridge at the south ... more

Cordoba - a very Moorish city

Advantages: Plenty to see and do, great seafood
Disadvantages: Gets terribly hot in summer, not cheap

Cordoba is a city I felt I knew even before I'd been; that's probably because it is home to some well-known historical sites and is a city that has made a big contribution to Spanish culture, most notably through the art of flamenco dancing and music. It is a city with a reputation of hot days and hot nights and there is nowhere that better encapsulates the many cultures that have contributes to the melting pot that is Andalusia. When thinking about ...
...had on Cordoba. Cordoba was the "capital" of the Moorish kingdom of El-Andalus and the legacy of the Moors is everywhere; you see it in the coloured tiles around the doorway of white-washed homes through to the brilliantly named dishes on menus like "Moros y Christianos" - this is a classic dish of rice with black beans and translates as "Moors and Christians (as if you hadn't guessed). THE MEZQUITA The "Mezquita" started life as a mosque; at the ...

Cordoba - The Heartland of Argentina

Advantages: a prsoperous, relaxing alternative to Buenos Aires
Disadvantages: perhaps does not portray the rest of the country accurately

During my travels of South America we stumbled across the city of Cordoba almost by accident, as a stopping point between some of the more well known visiting places. It was a memorable stop though with it’s picturesque scenery and endless activities and is recommended to anyone in the area. The city is known as the Heartland of Argentina due to its location in the centre of the country and is one of the more prosperous parts of this economically crippled nation. It was the original capital city of Argentina and is now only behind Buenos Aires in national importance economically. It is Argentina's colonial capital with a population of over a million people and is nationally recognised as a University town. As such it is cluttered with old scholar buildings such as the Montserrat School (1687) and churches including ...

CARMONA (not a back-seat driver)

Advantages: More history than you can shake a centurion's spear at
Disadvantages: May be too quiet for some

Carmona sits on an elevated piece of land commanding sweeping views of the Corbones valley, around 30km from Seville. This is a very fertile region so it's no surprise that this strategic site, one of the few high points in the area, has been settled by humans for a long time. How long? I'm not going down the road of historical time-lines, but let's just say that there is evidence of human settlement from the neolithic period. It was during the Roman occupation that the town flourished, and apparently, the old town still follows the original Roman urban plan. The defensive gates, Seville and Cordoba, are Roman, but the most important Roman site in the town has to be the Necropolis (more on that later). The town's prosperity continued under almost 500 years of Moorish occupation, and indeed, was a major player during the reconquest ...

Review of Carmona, Seville

A Palatial Hotel fit for a Queen

Advantages: A wonderfully characteristic hotel
Disadvantages: None

Carmona is a town with a very long history and is situated about 30km east of Seville. It lies astride the NIV Seville-Cordoba highway so the town is very easy to find. The Alcazar de la Reina Hotel is situated in the heart of the old town. It's not hard to find as it's more than adequately signposted, but it's still a bit of an ordeal driving to it. The old town was not designed with the automobile in mind (in fact I doubt whether the wheel was even invented when much of this place was built!) and you must negotiate a torturous and convoluted route through the incredibly narrow streets and lanes (all one way). The streets are so tight, it could be quite hair-raising - I don't have much hair so I was alright. When we eventually cleared the claustrophobic streets, we found ourselves at one of the highest points of the town with a car ...
