I visited the little Island of Corfu in September 1998 and was left with mixed feelings.
I have visited several Greek Islands and This ranks lowest on my list.
I stayed in the resort village of Kassiopi which is about an hour on a coach from the Airport at Corfu Town.
Its a coastal fishing village by trade and sits near the north East Tip of the Island.
You can see Albania just across the water only 6 miles away.
To the North Coast are the quiet beach resorts of Sidari and Roda.
This is for the easy going beach holiday types that want nothing more than to Lie on a beach all week.
If you expect anything else you will be dissapointed as there is very little else.
If its fun and excitement you want, You need to be in the south part of the Island.
The party capital of the island is Kavos.
Kavos holds all of the bars, clubs and nightspots that are worth visiting on the island.
More for the young and lively than for a family holiday, you could say is quite Loutish and loud if being really honest.
When I was there in September, everything was shutting down for th eseason and thankfully the louts had gone. It took 2 Hours on a moped to get there from Kassiopi.
As for culture and history, the island has that too.
Corfu Town is the capital and has a large horbour. It also holds the Airport.
Here you canshop in the historical backstreets of civilisations from the past as well as marvel at the major fort from the days of foreign occupation.
There has been plenty of conquering over the years. The Italians Ruled the shores of Corfu for 400 years before surcumbing to the French. The British were colonists for 50 years before handing it back in 1864.
As you can see, everyone has tried to own it at one point. Mainly for its strategic nautical position in the sea.
Known as the Key to European domination, Corfu has always played an important part in the winning of Wars. Hold the island and you can mount an attack on Europe.
My holiday stay was mainly in Kassiopi and I would reccomend it to anyone.
The only thing I would say is, dont go in September. It rains a lot. Go at a warmer time of year.

I have been to Kavos and I agree, it is the party capital. The only problem was the partying went on all night and who wants to sleep in the day when the sun is out? The most exhausting holiday I ever had!
