Corfu Airport :~ Now if anybody should know how bad Corfu or Kerkyra airport is i should as we had a delay of 8 1/4 hours. Mind you this was nothing to do with the airport more to do with Thomson and not getting a replacement plane after ours had broken down in Turkey almost 24hrs previously.
Arrival :~ Upon arrival we were met by buses to take us from the plane to the terminal. So as usual they pack you in like sardines then off we went 15 very sweaty seconds later we stop and get off. Why we had to get on the bus when walking would have been quicker and more comfortable someone higher only knows. What makes it crazier the other bus pulls up behind us with next to nobody on it, so why does everyone get told to cram on the first bus? Inside the airport air conditioning keeps you cool. Next passport control, some Greek policeman more interested in the girls with short skirts than looking at any one's passport. Toilets are located near the carousel. You have to go down some stairs never noticed a lift or disabled toilets upstairs. They are clean but only a couple so if your busting you need to get there fast or you may get a wet patch while queueing. To be honest the men's toilet was not to bad but the ladies queue went all the way up the stairs. By the time I returned to the carousel my luggage had arrived this must be a record never even expected it to be off the plane yet. Trolleys are provided for your luggage and there seemed to be ample for everyone. A short walk takes you to the holiday reps and a couple of shops these sell holiday tat and drinks if you need any for your transfer. Also car rental and hotels can be booked from a few kiosks. Outside taxi are available for independent travellers and again there seemed to be enough for everyone who required one.
Departure:~ The return visit was not as good as the arrival. Forget about the delay the airport just does not have enough facilities for the amount of passengers travelling through. It seems Thompson passengers get the raw deal as before you are aloud to check your luggage in you have to wait outside on a grassed area which is covered in canopies with chairs underneath. This is little help when the temperatures are in the high 30's. Temperatures start to rise with the passengers after 45 minutes waiting for the gate to open. Even when the gate did open nobody was told, luckily I noticed so went in and cooled down in the air conditioned departure gate area. It was another 10 minutes for the other passengers to realise they could come in out of the heat, Thompson making no effort to tell them to come in. Only 1 restaurant and a couple of cafes selling snacks all packed, the food served was nice but pricey. Passport control was straight forward enough duty free area was also packed so would leave it as long as possible before going through.
Overall the airport is just to small, with tour operators not helping the situation by getting passengers there way before they need to.
